Picked up a 1989 Honda Hawk GT last weekend.  Previous owner was a serious rider, this bike has been to Mexico, Alaska, Canada, and all over the lower 48.  As a result she has some highway miles on her, but has been well maintained.  Previous owner wouldn't sell her to me until after he went over her maintenance logs, and showed me his pattern for when to do what.  Here's a few pics:

Nice color matched fairing that is a perfect fit for this bike.  Seller said it was a Rifle, but could be a Targa Tsunami

Single sided swing arm is really kinda neat looking, I've never owned a bike with this design before.

Corbin seat that probably color matched with the red before sun fade, may have that rear section recovered at some point.  Low priority right now.

Supertrapp exhaust mounted up is about 25 pounds lighter than stock, but also much louder.  Course, right now it's running without any diffuser discs, so I'll experiment with that.  I have a bag with about 25 diffuser discs and the chrome finish piece.

Also got as part of the deal two OEM exhaust systems, one mint, one scratched a little.  Also a service manual, and stacks of paperwork.  Bike received a new chain, sprockets, and fluids less than 1000 miles ago.  Also got the OEM seat.  Heated grips too!

Things it needs:
  • two illumination bulbs burnt out in instrument cluster
  • Rear cowl is sun faded, and will need to be repainted
  • Tires are 50% at best, will need new shoes sometime soon
  • Temp gauge is inop.  Will troubleshoot sender, but these bikes are known for being hard to bleed the coolant system, maybe a bubble at the sender

First impressions?  Wow, it feels like such a light and flickable bike.  Love at first twistie!  I was comfortable on it from the moment I pulled out on the road, if fits me well ergonomically.  I like the v-twin layout, it seems to be a much more compact package than the inline 4s that I'm used to.

So far, I'm smitten!

Very nice Hawk  thumb

I just saw one of these the other day at the local Honda dealership. It wasn't for sale...a customer rode it in. It was black with a red seat.

very jealous!  great looking bike!

it is such a nice change to hear that the PO was completely anal about maintenance and rode for the love of it.

That fairing looks a lot like the Targa Tsunami, I have installed on my 750!

49K.  She is no trailer queen that's for sure.  I had a line on a very similar bike with much lower mileage, for only a few hundred dollars more that I paid.  Difference to me was the seller of the lower mileage bike could not answer my questions about maintenance.  The guy selling the 49K bike detailed how often he changed fluids, tires, chain, etc, to the point of telling me which chain wax he found to work best.  He replaced the Hawk with a Triumph Tiger outfitted expedition style with panniers, crash bars, etc.

When I went to pick up the bike I wound up hanging around for 5 hours talking bikes, dogs, everything.  I bought the bike from a guy that I plan on riding with in the future, can't say more than that.

You may be right, I edited the original post to indicate.  Seller said Rifle, but sure looks like the Tsunami.

Here is a photo of the Targa Tsunami on the 750.   I think you have a Targa instead of said Rifle...  banana

Very cool little bike! Unusual to see V-Twins that aren't big Harley slugs or some japanese cruiser with the 45-ish degree layout. How's the power delivery?

If memory serves, it's a 52o v-angle with a double pin crankshaft to avoid the potato potato idle.

Yes, the design is based on the 500cc v-twin in the Ascot/Shadow VT500.

Nice find.  Good looking bike.  I ran into a local CL sale (same year model with about 15K miles) few weeks ago. The bike was clean but the seller insisted for $3K.
