I know we recently chatted about my starter clutch in another random thread, but after reading through my new maintenance and service manual, I can't help but wonder.... Why do they not recommend taking the primary shaft out through the side and working on the starter clutch that way. I see it can be done, but I can't figure out, and haven't seen anyone say why they say to do it this way. Is there any harm from pulling it from the side? Are their parts that may or may not line up if you don't drop it in upon reassembly? I was all good to go out through the side and replace it, but after reading the manual... I'm nervous again. Thoughts...comments...

You can always try it...but I imagine the folks who wrote the manual know why you can't do it that way.
But heck I might be wrong, you may be the first...

The 82 650 is the older SOHC engine design. I never had to change the starter clutch or open the cases on the one I had. I no longer have it to look at so I'm not sure if it can be done that way or not.

On the '82, you have to split the cases to remove the starter clutch. I'm not sure how else you would do it. The starter clutch went out on the '82 I had, and upon investigation I could not figure out how to get it out any other way. If you removed it from the side, it seems that the chain would fall to the bottom of the case. I usually find that if the Honda manual says to do it a certain way, there is probably a good reason. I would be nervous about taking it out from the side.

On the older sohc4 engins you dont have to split the cases. Did one last summer. There is a couple links at the 650 site and st sohc4 site. I'll post links as I find them. It is fairly easy as u look "back" at it. During youl cuss and kick. Here is the sohc4 one and the 650 site link is in here just read it all and youll find it. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=78920.msg880674#msg880674

Alright, since no one had a definitive answer, I went ahead and tried it. Sure enough, I got it off... Drop the oil pan, pull off the clutch, and vualla....that shaft pulls right out leaving the chain intact to the primary shaft up top cause it to dangle... Was really simple actually, and upon removal I determined that I have some bad springs....now that I have the starter clutch out... how does a person get out the plungers and springs?
