Hi -- I read an earlier thread on here about mysterious CB700 SC leaks that seem to come from inside the frame, and me thinks that's whats going on with my new purchase (and maybe why it was cheap at $400).  I fixed a shifter seal leak, cleaned it up and there is oil coming from what looks like a seep hole or bolt hole on the frame.

There is an earlier thread where a 92 CB750 oil cooler was used since they have external hoses, and the owner claimed everything was a straight bolt-on fix, with no fab required, same hoses, fittings, and everything.  (and sorry if there is a neater way to point to earlier threads -- I am a newbie here.)

http://nighthawk-forums.com/index.php/topic,5502.0/highlight,frame.html

My question -- anyone else have any experience with this fix?  The oil coolers for the 750 are available and cheap -- trying to fix the internal frame oil leak seems impossible, if not just so expensive as to make it nearly so.  Especially if there is a straight bolt-on fix and oil coolers are out there for under $50 bucks....

And again I wonder how anyone figured this kind of stuff out before there were forums?  I'll post a pic of my new bike this weekend -- a little rough around the edges (hand painted gas tank, weird grips, odd signals) but a lot of fun.  My first time riding in a few years so it seems a good get-back-in-the-saddle bike, and at the price i could not pass it up.

I remember reading that thread and I think everything bolted up fine.

Now, is your leak because the oil tubes running inside the frame are damaged? Or is it just leaking because the connections need new seals?

I damaged my oil line that ran inside the frame once a few years back. I used a bolt that was too long for the engine mount on the lower right side and it punctured the line. I investigated going with an external oil cooler line, but I ended up getting 2 parts bikes and just transferred everything over to a good frame off the parts bike.

Exactly where is this hole that's leaking?  There are drain plugs on the frame to drain the oil from the frame when you do a oil change. If it's leaking from these, maybe you just need a new washer on the drain bolts.

I'll look at it again and see if i can get a decent pic this weekend.  Thanks for the input -- it is a bit messy so I'll give it a better clean and see what i can find.

Jeff, was that bolt for the Crash bar ?

It was where the crash bar bolts to the frame on the right side. Specifically the bolt that has a spacer on it. I didn't use the spare  shog

I can tell you this...after I punctured the inner line, oil came pouring out of it...even with the bolt in.
