I got another one. Hubby is livid, but we're talking about it. The project 440 must get gone to satisfy him...

Very nice Jen  thumb

My first street bike was a 1980 CX500. I loved it. Too bad they didn't sell the CX650 states side. I lust for that bike when I see them come up for sale here in Canada.

It starts and it runs and it rides. Other than the exhaust, which is an awful concoction of gutted Harley pipes and a missing collector, it is complete. And the wiring harness is blissfully unmolested.
It needs a front tire, a battery, and new neck bearings to be streetable. It needs several more seals and a lot of polishing to be nice. Maybe paint.

Sounds really good but it's totally gutless in the midrange. This model has both low-speed and high-speed coils, so it could be one of them, or it could be a clogged jet, or it could be the very highly-tuned nature of the this model's exhaust, which has been boogered up royally.
I'll get to it all pretty soon....after the Concours you see behind it gets a new tire and the front end stiction sorted out....

Jenn, you are my HERO.  mol you are amassing quite the collection of bikes. Did it come with an extra engine? Or did you already pull it out of the bike.   poke

I'm sure Hubby will forgive you soon.

Nice grab.

Man I love those cx500's. Are you going to restore it, repair it, or cafe it? On another note, my brother in law is stationed at Ft Stewart and is looking for a project. Post some info about your 440 if ya still got it.

Oh, the 440 is a welder with hand for carbs away from running! I just want to find it a good home for very little $$$!

The 440 has been bored out to almost 500 using Suzuki pistons and rings (because these pistons and rings are no longer available). An excellent old-school mechanic did the actual machine work. I have the stock seat, tank, blinkers--everything.
I split the cases and put a kickstart in this motor. It works. The tranny is great. The motor has been run, and ridden through all the gears.
The problem is the carbs--the '80-'82 carbs suffered the growing pains of the EPA rules, so the carbs on any of these models are pretty hard to mess with--in comes the single-carb conversion! I already have a carb from a Honda 3-wheeler that is known to work for this conversion, and the intakes have already been welded. What is left:

mount the new carb
Jet the new carb
re-work the wiring harness (I've already made a template and it runs with it; but a better one must be made based on my template)
The rest is just customizing fun!

Let me know if somebody's after a project. You need a welder and some small understanding of carburetion to finish this project...I even have a very good paint job already done.

Drive shaft is on the right side of the CX500 - different.  How many miles are on that bike?    Do you think it would be a better commuter than the VFR or the bandit?

You should filter Craigslist from your computer.   giggle

It has 10k on the clock. I used to think these were terrible bikes to own because the mechanics I talked to didn't want to work on them, the engine is so different.

But now...now I work on my bikes myself so I'm not skeered! Besides, I did my homework before I made my offer (it was a very, very small offer from my summer travel money and the sale of Vmax parts). I know I can perform the most common repairs on this bike: failing stator, failing CDI (replacement aftermarket available), and water pump seal. The rest of the chasis is good old UJM. The bike has none of the above problems thus far, only the exhaust system franken-monster on there now, and maybe a carb cleaning if that doesn't fix it.

Some really cool dude in MN has a complete exhaust and he's sending it to me for shipping, it's not beautiful but it is solid.
The CX forum is quite helpful but not as active as the NH forum...I've gotten a lot of information there already.

Will it commute? Likely will commute very well. These bikes are still popular with couriers in Japan for their ease of maintenance and long life. The riding position couldn't be more neutral. And they lend themselves to a great deal of customization:

I had one of those when I was in Okinawa. Was a pretty good bike once you got used to bangin' your shins on the cylinder heads.

Jenn, you should have plenty of room for more bikes since you don't have a car.

It also seems like the cafe guys are always after the cx500 tanks for their conversions. The style and size of those tanks seem to fit what they're looking for.

Very nice! You can do so much with the little CX's. It's a great little platform, especially since the starting point is kind of hit or miss.  Me and my Dad are almost through putting this one together, started out looking pretty similar to yours Jen...

Looking forward to seeing your finished product  claps

Ha, that's nice Nut...it reminds me of a few of the newer Shadows with the cruiser-esque setup....

I don't have a lot of mods in mind, I was just gonna ride it a while. If I love it I'll keep it, if it doesn't suit my needs, I think I can get back what I've put into it.

Unless I learn to weld, my customization abilities are pretty limited. About all I can do is paint... umph
Maybe I need to convince HOKS to buy a welder and teach me how to use it...
