I've already posted this in another board, but I'm really need some help so I'll post here too.  I have an 83 Nighthawk 550.  The battery isn't charging.  It's a brand new battery.  If I charge it and put it on the bike it's drained in 10-15 minutes of riding.  The bike rides fine as long as you don't stop, but the second the RPM's get too low it dies and won't restart.

Any ideas?  I'm totally new to bikes and know literally nothing, I've been reading and it seems these bikes have electrical issues but I'm not even sure where to start.  I've ordered a repair manual but it will take a few days to get here so in the meantime if any of you guys have any suggestions I would appreciate it.

Do you have a multimeter.

If not go buy one. I prefer digital.

Yeah, but I've never used one, well I've used one a few times but I know just enough to be dangerous.
