Today I got to meet up with a friend from the maxi-scoot forum.  We took a long ride in the 100 degree heat of about 240 miles riding through Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.  Had a great time and Paul mapped us out a fantastic route.  Here are some highlights of the very long day, about eleven hours in the saddle.

The route.

The ol' birds meeting up in Littleton, MA.

Honda seems to like things with wings!

Our first covered bridge find.  I forget the name of this bridge but it is still in service and in quite good shape.

Paul waiting as I run in down the road in 100 degree heat wearing full gear to get a photo of a church that caught my eye.  Probably didn't think I was too bright at that moment.

Here's the church.  I pass these types of churches all the time in New England and always wanted to get a photo of one.

The Dummerston bridge.  Still in service but only room for traffic in one direction at a time.

How you like that sleepycow, finally a good meal on the road, I guess third times the charm.  I can highly recommend the Newfane Cafe and Creamery to anyone visiting Vermont.

The most delicious BLT I've ever had.

Check out this table inside the cafe, the top is made of jar lids.

Only to be outdone by this lounging sofa.

It's made of coins!

The mighty Nighthawk.

Overlooking the Dam.

Another one!  The Scott bridge.  This one was closed to traffic and in some disrepair.

Some great views of the river through the broken slats of the bridge walls.  Kids were jumping off the bridge and into the river.

The inside of the Scott bridge.  Notice the two large arcs on either side.  These were added later to strengthen the bride, it didn't work.

Back to the bikes.

An old water wheel.  I don't think this is much more than a tourist attraction anymore as it is near a large country store.

A quick stop for one last refreshing treat.  Delicious vanilla and banana split gelato in Peterboro, NH.

The long road home.

Had a great time even in the blistering heat, now I need to febreeze my helmet after sweltering in the sun all day!  Sleepy sorry I didn't give you a call to join us, this was a last minute decision to ride.  Hopefully next time we can get all three of us on the road.

It's normally not that hot in New England... just biding our time with the same heat wave that is across the entire country.  The entire day wasn't triple digits, when I started at 7:30 in the morning it was around 85F and climbed up to the high 90's in about two hours.  The riding wasn't too bad, plenty of water and frequent stops in the cool shade.

Certainly has been a heatwave here in Ohio. It's kept me from riding at all lately. Heat index up to 110.

As ususal F/B - great ride report and pictures.

We do not have any covered bridges in the deep south as I believe this is done to keep snow off the bridge deck, lest it turn to ice?

Taking a year off to tour this country on a motorcycle is probably my biggest dream right now.

Great pics, Fishball. I've never been a fan of scooters but, that SilverWing looks nice and comfy.

Those are supposed to be fast enough for highway use, right?

JB a SilverWing has a 600cc parallel twin motor.  The top speed is somewhere around 112 mph.

I missed the question completely pants, sorry about that.  From what I've read keeping snow off the bridge wasn't the issue.  Matter of fact one of the sources I read stated that they actually had bridge tenders that would cover the decking in snow to allow horse drawn sleighs to cross.  Here is an explanation, can't guarantee that it is accurate but makes sense to me...

"What you're really trying to protect in a covered bridge are the structural members--the trusses. Made of heavy timber, these are the expensive part of the bridge, and if they fall apart due to exposure to the elements, so does the bridge. An unprotected wooden bridge will last maybe ten years. Put a cover over it, however, and it'll last for centuries."

Awesome, I don't think we have any covered bridges out here that I know of.  Was there any information saying how many coins it took to build that lounging sofa?  Looks mighty tedious...

I'll be ready to ride again this week though.

Good to hear sleepy.  Maybe a short ride this week as next week I'm heading to Pennsylvania for the rally.  A run up to Gloucester and Rockport perhaps??
