A bit faster, a lot less comfortable, and terrifying in the twisties.  Low speed handling (parking, gas stations) takes a lot of patientce/practice.
She scares me a lot.  A LOT!

Congratulations! Those are absolutely gorgeous bikes.   beer

According to the BMW USA website:

"This year, California Superbike School switched from rival 600 Supersport motorcycles to the BMW S 1000 RR. Despite having 80 more horsepower, the number of student crashes on track has declined by 58%. While the tracks, training, and students haven’t changed, the safety features of the S 1000 RR have led to a significant reduction in accidents."

I think by safety features, they mean the ABS and traction control. So heck, sounds like the bike practically rides itself!

Expect to be challenged by the occasional 'Busa and CBR.

Oh this is the new one with all the fancy technology.  It's nice that BMW has finally gotten serious and stopped holding back, but I worry about over-reliance on electronic gadgetry.  Is the low-speed trickiness due to the ergonomics/geometry, or are their design glitches?  I rode a Rockster with some awful power brake system that forbade gentle feathering and I hated it.

I really wish they'd get over the asymmetric styling.  But supposedly this is a near game-changer in making sportbikes user-friendly.

Sweet Mother of............ I really like the front of that bike, even though it's not symmetrical. Still love the 1970's r65.

Holy Crap! That thing is sweet!

Gotta love your description: "A bit faster, a lot less comfortable, and terrifying in the twisties."  You're one who likes a challenge huh?

Still, amazingly sweet ride.

Oh this is the new one with all the fancy technology.  It's nice that BMW has finally gotten serious and stopped holding back, but I worry about over-reliance on electronic gadgetry.

That's the nature of the beast. Almost every military and commercial aircraft flying today depends on computers and technology to stay aloft. The F-117A stealth fighter (called Nighthawk, BTW!) was unflyable without computer assistance. Look how many cars now have ABS, traction control, and a whole bunch of other abbreviations that escape me. I think a new car contains more computing power than the space shuttle.

I believe that the features on this BMW will trickle down and eventually be standard on the majority of motorcycles. Any technology that increases rider safety is going to be adopted across the industry, because it's tough to grow your business when you're killing (or scaring off) your customers.

I fully expect that one day, we'll see motorcycles using Segway technology to stay upright at stoplights without the rider having to put feet on the pavement.

Seems like LOKI, Mr Pants, Ari, (Hangster if he was able), soup, and myself would make an extremely fun canyon carving group!  Hey, I can dream...

But a motorcycle doesn't have the problem of falling forward or backward; it's side to side that is in danger of a tip over.

If you can keep an object from falling forward or backward, you can keep that same object from falling side to side. Just rotate them gyros 90º.

Have fun with that thing. Stopped by a BMW shop and that had one on the floor with a dyno chart taped to the seat.  Showed peak horsepower at something like 180hp... at the rear wheel  yikes yikes yikes

That is a good looking bike.  Not into the supersports but I would be lying if I said that bike didn't pique my interest.

Going carbon fiber with the side fairings and headlight fairing.  Keeping the rest white.  Should be a fun romp in the mountains.
