What is the difference between the CX650 block and the CX500 block?
I have no clue.

Apparently swapping a 650 engine into a 500 frame is fairly easy, so they must be similarly dimensioned.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the 650 is just the 500 punched out larger.

Here are the bore and stroke specs that I was able to find online;
CX500 78.0mm x 52.0mm
CX650 82.5mm x 63.0mm
Seems reasonable that the 650 motor was a bored and stroked version of the 500, likely using the same gear cases and having the same overall basic dimensions.

That is a good looking bike, I like the design better than most new bikes sold today. If it isn't too much trouble could you get a photo of the instrument cluster? Just curious what the layout of it is like. Also maybe I missed it in the thread but what year is the bike? Good luck getting it running again.

That looks like a car's instrument panel.
Not saying that to be offensive, as I really like the bikes styling.

"The electronic ignition system was separated from the rest of the electrical system, enabling the motorcycle to be push-started and ridden in case of a total electrical system failure."
I dont know if this is the norm for bikes now, but that is pretty cool. Wikipedia has some other cool info. I think I may have to see if I can find one of these.

It's alive!
After installing a new battery, spark plugs and four 15A fuses she fired right up. No smoking from the pipes and the motor sounds nice and tight with no clicking or clanking. I have a new air filter on order and it also needs new tires, but so far it's awesome.

Fantastic Steve! How much fuel can the gas tank hold on that bike?

Good work Steve, that sounds real nice Once you get it road worthy, I think I might have to come up to Ottawa for a meet and greet and more importantly, check out this bike I'm sure some of the other Ottawa members on here would love to meet up with you too.

The new air filter arrived today and has been installed, so I feel better about revving the engine a bit more.

I had priced out tires but didn't buy any yet. It took some elbow grease to clean it up and the bike is starting to come together nicely.
