Am i missing something here scratcher , just got a smaller set today and they don't fit DirtDOG (not in the helmet but on my head)...I have medium in the helmet and they are a little too tight so i bought  x-small installed them in the helmet and wow they are way too large , i could barely get the helmet on and taking it off well my ears are still in the helmet  eek7 but my head isn't.
Are these sizes backwards, or did someone mislabel them at the factory puzzled...what should i do?  buy  large and see if they are  smaller

i know on scorpion helmets they make 2 or 3 different size helmet shells that cover the full range of sizes. Then the removable pads are corresponding in size according to the shell size. If you have a medium shell, the pad sizes are based on that particular shell used to make a medium. you should consult the mfg. This is why it is so important to see what fits you first    in whatever particular make and style, and order later.

if whoever makes your helmet only uses one size shell and you need more cheek room you should be ordering larger size pads, not smaller ones.

It confused me at first till the guy fitting my helmet explained it. Remember to tell them you have a med. helmet, need more cheek room....smaller pads.....for a med. helmet.

Dude I think that the helmet shells are all the same size; so they make the cheekpads bigger in the smaller sizes to fill it up!

That's why the small size is so uncomfy to you.

I am a very small bean-shaped head, I wear either a child's small or an extra small Arai for way too much money, to find a helmet that fits without 5 inches thick of cheek pads.

Those cheek pads will break in a lot, might want to try running it awhile....

You'll probably get the opposite effect. Washing and drying the ones in my Shoei makes them a little stiffer and returns them to the original larger size which is a good thing if they fit properly and snug to start with.

One trick would possibly be wash them and get them mostly dry, then go riding for a few hours. That might let them adjust closer to the right size though that might eliminate the little extra tightness that's important in an impact. I'm not sure the idea will work at all though so it's pure experimental if you try it.

Like others have said, I've found most manufacturers use 2-3 shell sizes.  HJC breaks down like this:

X-Small, Small & Medium
Large & X-Large
XXL

So the difference, for example, between x-small, small, & medium is the padding.   Here's information from Newenough.com:
Code:
Helmet Size  Cheek Pad Size  Shell Size
XS 35mm Small
Small 30mm Small
Medium 25mm Small
Large 25mm XL
XL 20mm XL
XXL 17mm XL
XXXL 20mm XXXL

So it does make sense that you'd need cheek pads from a larger helmet to make room in your medium helmet.
