Just read in "Motorcyclist" that in the 80's harley and porsche developed a v4 engine capable of 120 hp. They also developed a reverse trike in the 90's. According to the article, these innovations were dropped for marketing reasons. Pretty interesting read.

I know may HD riders and have NEVER had any attitude from them. I get or see more attitude from sport bike riders. I have even gone so far as stopping by the local custom bike shop(read HD) to ask some questions and had to have him jump my sabre before buying a new battery. THere are some bikers out there that think that Harley is the only bike to have, and in actuallity I am looking at a couple Super GLides and if I can get them at the right price I will.

I have a 27 yr old touring bike that will run off and hide form most HD's. I love my NH and just bought a shadow that I am sure I will enjoy. I have not had any problem with the Harley crowd. One of the parts guys in my local HD shop rides a Goldwing and one of the service writers rides a VTX. Go figure.

Thus the rep of harley as "old tech" is upheld by their own actions.  Not much difference between not having new ides and not using them.

I am a motorcycle enthusiast. After riding for over 36 years and owning over 40 motorcycles, including 3 Nighthawks, I am on my second Harley. It is more than the marketing hype people have mentioned earlier in this post. My Grandfather owned a Harley and so it kind of runs in the family, plus it is an American icon (made in USA) and they are a work of art. Plus they hold their value like no other vehicle, some even go up in value over time!

I just purchased my 3rd Nighthawk recently and am posting about it on this forum as I restore it (1985, 650 Nighthawk), so I have no problem riding and owning Honda's.

The thing about Harley's is you cant really explane it in one paragraph, value, beauty, sound, ride, heritage, investment, these are all the reasons for me.

But, I love all bikes, I just love to ride and I wish I had the money to collect more. I would love to have an Indian or a Triumph too, but they cost more than a Harley. You do need to step up and sacrifice some serius money for a Harley, but heck, you can't take the money with you when you die, can you?

Also, remember that the Harley engines have come a long way in the past 10 years. They don't leak oil anymore and have all new electronics in them. They are incredibly reliable, just as good as metrics these days, and get great gas milage. My Fat Bob with a 96 cubic inch engine (1580cc) gets around 45 mpg, is fuel injected and all electronic computerized with a built in security system. It is a joy to ride and very low maintenance. I think Harley got a bad name in maintenance in the 70s when they produce the crap bikes with AMC in charge.

My Nighthawk will most likely kick it's butt in the quarter mile though...

It was AMF that owned them in the 70's.

You just don't know what it's like to own a Gremlin.

The thing about Gremlins is you cant really explain it in one paragraph, value, beauty, sound, ride, heritage, investment, these are all the reasons for me.
