Anyone know the differences between the CB series and the CM series in the early 80s? I have an 80 CM400t and was wondering how close to the CB it really was...

I rode a borrowed CM200T off and on for about 2 years way way long ago. It's been a few centuries however the cylinders were tilted forward a bit but they were in line, not v-twin design.

I'm not sure about the exact differences. One thing though, the few CM's I've seen up to 450cc were twin cylinders only and IIRC they all had kick starters. At least the 200 I rode was typical honda reliable.

you are thinking of  cx / gl 500 or 650 not cb/ cm 400 / 450

All the CMs ive seen are inline twins
cb's are also inlines but there are two cylinders and 4 cylinder bikes, like my dad had a cb350 when I was a kid and it was a 2.
I think they're just different engines, like the CBs have more valves, more advanced style cams or something.
I always thought cm400Ts were pretty cool looking though, never rode one.

yeah I have a friend with a cm400E definitely a mish mosh of honda parts. seems like it was their parts bin bike. it is the most reliable thing ever though. that little parallel twin fires up the first time, every single time. Even when it sits outside in the freezing cold, rain, everything!

cm 400 were introduced about '78 as the honda hawk, three valve motor with 5spd trans . they were restyled into the cm 400 and the hawk name was dropped. there is a sport version called the cb 400t it looks like a little  '79 cb750f. then i think in '82  they grew to 450's and 6 spd trans were introduced

Yeah, I had a cm450e in 82. Very reliable low maint bike. I rode the crap outa it for several years and never had a problem from it and ended up trading it for a V45 Magna in 84.
