I might be getting a a 250 today, but there's something the seller mentioned I'm not so sure off. He mentioned something about the valves, could any of you offer some input? this is his craigslist posting:

1991 Honda Nighthawk 250cc. Every biker's first bike, as it's about as simple as can get and has a standard riding position (not a crotch rocket, not a cruiser, not a dirtbike). I've changed and fixed a few things, different/better turn signals, 33-tooth rear sprocket (gears it up by 1 tooth, better speed per rpms). Simple 250cc engine, gets pretty good MPG. Good commuter bike. I just adjusted the valves, so it sounds a little rattly as I adjusted them to the loose side, they'll quiet down in about 1000 miles. Has a windshield and a Rentec Rack (good to bungie your backpack to) 16 or 17 thousand miles, but let's face it, it's been around the block a bit. Fairly new fork seals, chain, rear sprocket, and some other stuff I can't remember right now. Selling for a low price to get it out of the garage, I have too many projects, and two other bikes, and I barely fit on this thing, my legs are just too long.

It doesn't take time for adjusted valves to quiet down. Once they are adjusted, they are adjusted.
I would be suspicious that he is using this as a way to mask something else.

And why would he adjust them a little on the loose side, on purpose?
Its highly suspect.

Although it does seem suspect, I wouldn't write it off until you go check it out.

I am in no way an expert on adjusting valve lash but, I have been doing some research on the subject since I will have to do it on my Bandit. I am not sure if this is the right way to do it but, I have read that a lot of people will adjust their valves on the lose end of the spectrum because the valves tend to tighten up after a few miles. Why this guy would adjust them so loosely that they would rattle doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Like I said, I'm no expert on the subject. I'm sure others here that know more about it could offer more insight.

I would say check it out and if you end up having to tighten up the valve lash because the PO didn't do it right, its not that big of a job on a 250.

thanks for the input. I think I'll check it out and see it myself. Hopefully someone else could offer some input also.
