My 1967 CA160 Baby Dream

« on: January 20, 2009, 09:28:46 AM »

I acquired my Nighthawk from a salvage yard, it had been laid down a couple of times and had pretty severe body damage...all the plastics were broken, gas tank was toast, front fender bent and lot's of road rash....I have painstakingly begun the process of bringing this bike back to it's one-time glory....haven't tried to start it yet...it does like it wants to start, but not pushed the issue.....well the time is drawing near for me to try to breath life back into the engine.....I drained the oil and I want to clean the oil screen (?).....but I can't find anything that even looks like something that could be this thing....can anyone tell me how to locate the oil screen and the proper cleaning procedure.....I spent hours yesterday searching the internet and such in hopes of finding something that would point me in a direction, but came up empty handed....I have purchased a service/repair manual for the bike, but it hasn't arrived as of yet.....and I am not refilling the oil until I know about this screen......

So any help/guidance would really be appreciated.....also wanted to make mention that I am a female, with a very vast knowledge of the mechanics of cars....but motorcycles are a horse of a different color for me...so I would need pretty clear instructions...(teeheehee)

Thanx and I can't wait to fire my latest toy up! I also own a 1967 Honda CA160 Baby Dream with 7,000 original miles....love the bike......had one in highschool and always wanted another.....but I also wanted something that I would feel a little better about running 60 mph or so with....so hence the Nighthawk came into my world....

Look in this exploded view: http://hondaparts-direct.com/fiche_section_detail.asp

BTW this is a good company to buy Honda parts from.  Cheapest I have found and rapid delivery if they have it in stock.  Phone your order in if you want to know if they have stock on the parts.

It looks like it is a wire screen, so I expect you just wash it with EPA approved solvent (or gasoline, if I were doing it).

Enjoy your bikes.

I had a CL160 in college before I upgraded to an SL175.  It was a fun bike on Houston's freeways.... riding flat out to keep up with traffic.

Ride Safely,

Welcome, Anita.

I also have a Rebel 250, which shares many parts with the Nighthawk 250. Any questions, fire 'em away!

clap2 Thanx everyone for the warm welcome...I really depend on finding these forums to help me with my resto's that I take on.....I had a 1974 Mustang II that I restored and sold to help fund my other passion...which is Honda Motorcycles, especially the vintage bikes.....I am slowly getting my Nighthawk back together as it was surely a sad sight when I got it.....now I am getting more into the mechanics of getting it running again....which I am hoping isn't going to be that big of a deal.....it sounds like it wants to start....I just haven't pushed it to that actual point of firing just yet....I wanted to do some simple service items on it first...like the oil change and ow trying to clean that oil screen.....my Honda service manual came yesterday and I was able to lookup in that how to remove and clean this screen....had no flipping idea that I would have to dismantle the crankcase and remove the oil pump just to get at this thing....sure was hoping for an external cover that I just had to remove...take out the screen, etc.....now I got to get gaskets and seals to replace when I take it apart.....the bike has 20,000 miles on it and has been sitting for about 3 years now so I am afraid to even try running the bike without cleaning the oil screen.....so my question now is for Green427.....have you ever done this screen clean thing before and if so...how hard is it to do and are there any tips/trix you can share with me concerning getting this chore done without creating more problems for myself!

Again....thanx to all of you and I know I'll have plenty more questions....so be ready...everything that I have ever restored/rebuilt has certainly been a team effort! wings

Oh yea....to post pictures  aparat here on this forum....do I first need to upload them to a service on the web or can they be uploaded directly from my hard drive?

You can upload directly from the hard drive.  Just choose additional options and browse and choose from where you've got it stashed on your hard drive.  Make sure the size is right though, otherwise the whole dealio will be screwed up.  Just follow the directions under the additional options and you'll be fine.

What a shame....I had to sell my 1968 Barracuda Fastback to fund my first baby 18 years ago, can't afford one now, so I'll stick with my second hobby, motorcycles. Sad

No, haven't done that yet, since my Rebel doesn't have that many miles on it.

If I remember correctly, that strainer should be cleaned every 15K miles or so. From what I've read, the Clymer's manual gives you good instructions on how to get to it. If you go to this Rebel forum www.rebel250.com and search 'oil screen', almost all owners say their screens had very little or no debris. Some folks said that they need to remove one exhaust pipe, others did not. You don't need a Rebel to join, but there are a few folks that have rebuilt 250's and offer a lot of advice.

One thing I definitely would do is get a magnetic drain plug, since our engines do not have a regular oil filter....although many folks have put upwards of 100K miles on 250's with nothing but frequent oil changes.

I had to sell my homebuilt airplane (see avatar) a few years ago and am only now able to afford getting back into riding.  I don't know if I'll ever be able to afford to fly again.  So much for all those certificates...  :-)

The NH search continues...
