I bought a 82 nighthawk for 600 bucks and it is amazingly clean and original with 9950 miles on it and it runs great with no hesitation to the motor shifts threw all gears well just cant find anything wrong with the bike super happy right now.  The bike even has the original break in reminder sticker on the speedometer glass.  Can anyone suggest stuff to check on the bike other than tires fluids brakes and chains and cables because from what I can tell this bike is flawless I think I really got lucky here.

Welcome to the group - ride safe.  There's an unwritten rule here...

Pictures or it didn't happen.    Just sayin.

To your question:

1.  Bleed the front brake with some fresh fluid.

2.  Tires older than 4 years get pitched regardless of mileage - safety issue IMO.  While you have your wheels off, check your wheel bearings for a flat spot from sitting so long.

3.  Check fork seals and consider replacing and changing fork fluid.

4.  Check steering head bearings - there's a thread or two here on how to do it.

5.  Get some seafoam and add about 2 oz per gallon of fuel for a couple of tanks.  It's a good carb cleaner.

6.  Lubricate your speedometer cable.

7.  Keep your battery in tip top shape.  The 650 has some inherited charging problems - mostly with the stator.  Although, it is more prevelant in the '83 and '84.  A strong freshly charged battery is your best defense, I believe.  I'd invest in a battery tender if I owned a 650.

8.  Most importantly, get the gear.  Get the FRIGGIN gear.  It might save your life.  DAMHIK.

Hope you enjoy your bike - where do you call home?
