i got this bike and it did not run. i got it running and it ran sweet. would idle and rev all day long in the garage. sold the bike and it went 7 miles and the engine locked up. pull the clutch and it rolls. let the clutch out in gear and wont do anything. not sure if i want to pull the engine and pull it down or part the thing out or what to do with it. any common problem that could have caused this to help my decision? thanks in advance dave

So let me get this strait...you got the bike running ok and then sold it. And the new guy rode it down the road 7 miles and the engine seized?

had he signed a bill of sale? If you did not know of any issues with it, then it is his problem.

Not to sound like a scumbag, but +1 to the above. That's all part of the risk with buying a 20+ year old bike...

I'd be more then happy to help him with advice if I were in your shoes but if you didn't know of any existing issues, then you did nothing wrong and he owns it

had he signed a bill of sale? If you did not know of any issues with it, then it is his problem. I'm not sure how legally binding a bill of sale is. It's certainly not required at all to sell vehicles and probably not worth the paper it's written on. Once money has changed hands and you give the title and keys to the new owner, it's no longer your problem in the least and you have no business touching it ever again. If you touch it, they can keep coming back to you about trivia and you really don't want to be his personal zero cost repair shop for the next 50 years. It's really not your problem at this point so why are you messing with it? If he crashed it at 7 miles would you take responsibility for the repairs? As far as you know, the guy got to 7 miles then put it in neutral and pinned the throttle wide open until it failed. The new owner knows, or should know, the risk of buying a used anything from anyone. If they want a warranty they need to get that in writing from you at the time of sale or they can go beat dirt when something goes wrong even if it fails at the first start attempt to leave with it. Play fair. Be honest. Be nice. Beyond that, it's their problem, not yours.

I'd say the best thing you could do was offer to help him fix it. He bought it, and like Bee said, it's used, with no warranty expressed or implied. If he's a good friend he should know you wouldn't try to screw him over.

Option 13 says it well. Then it is a matter of what kind of help or how much $ help.
paying 1/2 of the parts $ would be generous. And the Labor or labor costs would be his.

Oops!!! Lesson learned. Never sell a vehicle to a friend and always get full payment. Loans are for banks.

My Dad sold a old Lambretta scooter to his best friend. Conversation went something like this:
Friend: Would you consider selling that scooter? Dad: Yes Friend: Will you take $100 for it? Dad: Yes Friend: Will you help me load it? Dad: Yes
SOLD
Did it run? NO. Did he ask? NO.
Still good friends though.

im not real worried about the bike running or not. i will fix it if it isnt real expensive. what should i expect to pay for a motor? im not against parting the bike out either. has brand new tires on it (only have 7 miles on them LOL) all fresh paint. just trying to decide what to do with it is all. dave

"engine locked up" is pretty vague.
Step #1. Determine what is actually wrong. Step #2. Determined what parts are broken. Step #3. Figure out what is required to fix it.
Then think about what to do next.
It could be catastrophic. Or it could be something invasive yet not very expensive at all. You won't know until you start diagnosing the problem.

Good advice Bumblebee...get the facts before making any decisions. Had the same thing happen to me earlier this year...traded my Explorer for a Ranger pick-up. Each of us drove the other vehicle, we even swapped wheels as I wanted my near new tires and he wanted his better rims. Did the bill of sale and title signing. A week later he said he didn't want to do the swap saying there was a noise in the front axle. Turns out he drove to the mountains for a long weekend...and on the way back it started making noise. Turns out the front axle ran low on oil. Bad news is...it's sitting in my driveway...good news...bought the Nighthawk as replacement transportation! Should have stuck to my guns as I had no idea that the oil was low (and no spots on my concrete driveway...but he was a bit of a punk...and really don't need that kind of drama in my life...besides...would never have gotten the bike if it hadn't turned out that way...lol.

Have you tried to do a compression check? Will the engine turn over? As posted above, seized is pretty vague. If the engine turns over and you have good compression you may not be in as bad of shape as you think. I'm curious to the outcome of this one... May be interested in it if it's not a blown engine.
