I'm having a similar issue, although I don't see any smoke until the upper RPM range (6.5k+). Seems like I'm constantly adding more oil, the burning oil smell after a ride has also been progressively getting worse. I've been debating on whether or not I should invest in fixing this one or consider a replacement. This is on an 83 650 w/ 37.5k. The cam chain on mine is also one of the things that is in need of repair.

Bluish smoke means it's burning oil.  The two most common reasons for this are either piston rings, or valve seals.  As long as you check and refill the oil regularly you're not really hurting anything by riding it that way, but just know that the problem will slowly become worse until you finally decide to fix it.  I have the same problem with my bike right now, but I've decided not to fix it till the weather turns sour.
