So riding home, the truck next to me loses a light, one of the lights like those that are on barriers for construction zones, it hits my front tire, which causes a good drop in pressure (but the tire is fully in tact) and I now have no oil drain plug... I checked, I do not see any parts of the bolt, and it looks threaded still... gah? Thankfully I was able to make it 1 more mile and pull off the freeway.. Ok into the emergency lane, safely (across the freeway is a ride now... that added the insult part lol)

So you lost the top part of the oil drain plug?  All that's left is the threaded part of the drain plug?

If so, you'll probably need to use an easy-out to get the rest out.

Don't forget that the rim might be bent or out of balance now.

Glad to hear you're ok!  That could have caused you to go down!

Glad to hear you're ok!  bugey

As Karl said, that could have bent the rim (and done god knows what else!) I'd be wary of riding until she gets a complete once over.

I swear - every time I read a thread title like this, my hands sweat a little.  Is there something in the NHF server?

Glad you are OK, wraithscrono.

Thankfully it was just a large hunk of plastic that I hit, I also managed to stay on the bike perfectly for 2 miles before pulling over. Not by choice but feeling the front go flat I kinda just coasted until I could use the rear brakes to slow fully, kicked her into neutral from OD is quite an experience. And yes I am perfectly fine (ticked off but fine)

If you right click on your photobucket picture and open it in a new tab you can copy that URL here and put the img /img tag on it to display within the thread. Just so you know.

The bike should not be started at all until you repair that drain plug. I hope there was no damage by riding as far as you did. That's oil on the ground correct? Oil on ground = no oil in bike. Not much to do but put another oil plug back in, fill it with oil and give it a shot. Looks like there was plenty of oil when you got to the side. If you killed the bike right away you should be alright.

Yeah I killed it soon as I crossed the yellow line, and coasted to a stop. Tonight I am going to see about get a replacement plug, and few other parts (Thanks to a forum members help) inspect it all, check for cracks, hose it off fill with oil, wouldn't ya know it I just changed the oil last week too heh, let it run in the driveway for a while listen to it, then try and ride see if it acts any different.

Good on you keeping it shiny side up.  Those flashers have a big ol' battery in them - that must have been one heck of a bump at freeway speed (but you already knew that).

Just curious: How did it knock the drainplug out? Was it already loose?

That is exactly what I asked, I changed the oil last week, and used my torque wrench to make sure the bolt was in at recommended weight, the only thing I can think of is.. maybe is split the bolt.. or some type of voodoo magic....

Isn't there also a collar on the 700S to protect that bolt?

I'm thinking it was loose and ready to fall out already for whatever reason. If the bolt is completely missing and the threads are still there, it wasn't an impact event. There is also cooling fins and such in that area that would have been seriously damaged. At most it would damage the head of the bolt even if the motorcycle was driven over a block of cement at speed.

So, today I decided to test the engine , by putting in neutral, and trying to manually spin the motor after taking the plugs out: will not turn at all.. Feels seized up so now I say: just wonderful..

Checked, it is in neutral, and i tried to kick the starter: got a clack sound, so I pulled the plugs, put a wrench to the right side of the crankshaft, and it wont turn one bit.

Did the oil light work and if it worked did it come on?   Turn the crank bolt clockwise   With the bike on the centers stand an in 6th gear try turning the tire to get the engine to turn.  If you think it was locked up from running without oil, spray some lite oil in the plug holes first.

Something like WD 40 or some penetrating oil.  Just enough to coat the piston walls.  I think most lock ups are the piston to cylinder. Not the bearings.   If its not the pistons the oil won't hurt anything.

So I finally got the tool to remove the cam chain, pulled the head off, then the cylinder walls (jugs also ive heard it called) and well the pistons all slid out easy. It was a moment of horror because then i knew the seizure of the motor was further down. Piston 2 completely seized at the crankshaft.. Now I have to crack the case, and hope I can find the right parts now. Unless anyone has the bottom half of a NH700s lying around for sale.
