Ok, everyone, I guess its time to say hi. After all I have been reading your every word, lusting for your bike, or I should say lusting for my bike to be where many of yours are. Anyway, here's some quick info on Billy Jack. I recently took the MSC, got my license and spent every available minute combing craigslist for a Triumph Bonnie or a Scrambler. That all changed when I spotted a 1984 Honda Nighthawk for $900. Originally, I thought I would just spend some quick cash so I could get my ride fix, cash out in the spring and start looking again. By the way I paid $800. I'm really not sure if I over paid or not, I know I'm glad I didn't spend $3K +. I love her and I want to bring her back. Here is a quick phone pic after a good washing. The picture is decieving, the top of the tank, paint wise, is pretty bad.The speedometer / odometer doesn't work but the tach does. I found a thread related to this topic, so hopefully this will be fixed soon. A busted fork seal and quite a few other problems. But, all in all she runs damn good. I hope to be involved around the forum, time permiting. Anyway, Thanks for alot of the info I have soaked up from here.  |

I don't want to ride with out one and its a big decision, so I want to try on quite a few this weekend before pulling the trigger. I did have to tighten up the front brake, back is good. Tires are ok, but its high on the list. |

I picked up a barely running 550 and a parts bike for just under $800. I would say you are sitting pretty with that ride. It looks nice!

No, no... the 3K+ comment was aimed at the cost of a used Triumph. Money is relative to satisfaction. If you spent 3K and you are happy, then you got your monies worth. A Triumph would not have made me happier or more satisfied....That's what I meant. By the way, I really wish I had taken before and after photos. It looks clean, but trust me, it wasn't. |

Welcome to the group - ride safe.
1. Check the date code on the sidewall of your tires. If they are more than 4 years old, regardless of the tread condition, pitch 'em. The rubber gets hard over time, and that compromises your pavement grip - usually when you need it most. Then you crash. DAMHIK - trust me I learned this one the very hard way.
2. ATGATT - a helmet is nice, but you don't want to slide down the belt sander without an armoured jacket, armoured pants, gloves, and boots. Again, DAMHIK - trust me I know, but fortunately I didn't learn this one the hard way.
3. Pull your speedometer cable out from the wheel end. If the inner cable doesn't look obviously broken, then place it into a cordless drill, and spin it at a moderate speed in both directions. If your Speedo needle moves, your cable is good, and the problem is likely your speedo gear inside the wheel assy. If it doesn't, a replacement cable is readily available, and fairly cheap.
