A buddy of mine is looking at an 83 CB 1000 to buy this spring. Since he doesn't have his endorsement yet, he's asked me to take it for a ride so it will be legally ridden. He has ridden before (Shh! don't tell anyone) on a 82 CB650 and I'm pretty sure  some dirt bikes here and there. So I'm not too worried about him being to handle the bike.

Now I have always been under the impression that the Honda CB has always been a pretty solid design. It's worked out well for me. But I thought $2500 seemed pretty steep, even if the bike is in pristine condition. KBB even says retail value for this bike is about $2000. Could it be that it's sliding from the stage of being an old bike to being a collectible? Any thoughts and opinions are welcome. I'm just afraid he's getting a little ahead of himself and buying the first one he sees. I'm thinking there are better deals than this.

Well, I was looking for one of those last year- looks like a nice bike.

Things to look for-

Holes in the bottom of the exhaust- pipes are expensive.

Dep on how good of shape it's in, it might be a good deal.

If it's near mint, it's a very good deal.

That's a lot of bike for a noob!

thats a good lookin cb1000c but all the first gen dohc motors seem to have stator problems make sure that it is chargine before he buys it and offer that guy around 2 grand and see what happens anyway it wouldn't hurt. when  i bought my goldwing last year the guy was asking $3000 and i offered $2500 and he accepted my offer and  i got my first wing.

Well, we went and looked at it on Friday. It was sitting in the garage when we got there, and I took a quick look at it. Pulled the bike out and it fired right up. So I hopped on, got to the end of the driveway, turned and made it about 1/2 of a mile down the road to the stop sign. In coasting to the stop, it died. Now there's not enough juice to crank it over again. So I get on the phone to call my buddy to help me push it back. Of course he doesn't answer. About the time I get back to the driveway is when he realizes I called.

Put the bike on the charger for a little bit, got it started. But it had trouble staying idling, even with the choke on. It would kick up to about 3 grand, and then drop out. Give it a little throttle to keep it going, and it would repeat the cycle. Now it had been sitting there for about a year. Basically, the guy got new tires, brakes, etc done to it, drove it home, and died before it was ridden again. She showed us the bill, which was around $600.

So I took it down the road, just keeping an eye on the RPMs and giving it gas to keep it running. Once it warmed up, it ran fine. Everything worked, and was a comfortable ride. He walked away with the bike for $1600, and I drove it home. It could have just been old gas, or the carbs may need to be cleaned. It most likely needs a new battery. But I think he did alright. I'm hoping he gets on here, and posts some pictures.

All I can say is MSF.
That is alot of bike for a new rider.
I know you said that he has experience on a 650 and several dirt bikes, but it is still alot of bike to get back to riding.
Mentor him well and you will have a riding friend for a long time.

Preaching is done.
Sounds like a good buy for that price.

i'm glad he got the bike for less than $2500. make sure to drain the crankcase breather as most people don't even know about it ( even dealers ) so it gets clogged up

He's having a blast on it. In fact, he and I went on a 130 mile ride last Saturday. It was perfect weather up here. He's still a rookie from time to time and leaves his turn signal on until the next turn. But hey, even I occasionally make that mistake. He had a Nighthawk before I knew he rode. A 550 I believe, but he said he could never get it above 45 MPH. He still hasn't made it over here yet. I gotta give him another reminder.

have him check in over at www.cb750c.com also. that is a forum for early dohc 4 cyl hondas and can help with about any issues he may have with the bike like shimming the valves
