My 86 700S died and wont start. Spark plugs are sparking and carbs seem to be full of fuel since fuel comes out when i loosen the fuel bowl drain screw.  I squirted starting fluid in the airbox and it fired up.  Is it likely for fuel to be in all of the carbs and yet no fuel is getting into the engine????

Hi all

I have a 84 700sc that has a similar issue fuel is getting in to the carbs, but it will not run i sprayed some staring fluid in the air box and it ran for a few seconds before it died. i took the carbs off and opened them up they look clean and shiny. the petcock seams to be working as well I'm outta ideas.

A little background on the bike i just got it from someone that claimed it ran about 5 years ago i got it so cheap i didn't care that it didn't run. I have some auto tech training however i have only dealt with carbs on my lawnmower, I'm used to efi systems.

Thank you

that's what i assumed but i opened the carbs up (the 4 screws on top and the 4 screws on bottom) and there the cleanest carbs i have ever seen there is no debre or gunk anywhere i saw. that's what i don't get i expected some kinda gunk in them. I will try to post some pics of inside tomorrow

Thank you
Tom

See the stuff in the bottom of the bowls? It looks like a combination of old fuel residue and rust from the tank. Before ya put the carbs back on I would flush the tank, clean the petcock and screen/filters on it, and put a clear filter between the petcock and the carbs. If your just wanting to get riding I would at least install a filter in the fuel line and keep a couple handy for when they clog up and you come to a halt in the middle of nowhere. wacko

Cool, I guess they went all out with the black theme on the 700s.
