When I try to start my 86 cb700sc, it does not crank the engine but instead just emit a low whining sound! I guess I am experiencing  the infamous starter clutch problem. Can some one please point me to any link to fix it?

Pull the starter off the bike. Stick your finger in the hole where the starter was. You'll feel a gear in there. If you can only spin the gear in one direction, then you're in luck. There's just something wrong with the starter engaging. If you can turn the gear in both directions, bad news, either the starter clutch is bad or the starter chain is broken. Either one requires pulling the engine and spitting the cases. May as well replace piston rings, rod bearing, and main bearings while it's open and the parts are still available.

Sadly I can turn the gear in both direction after taking out the starter. Is there any link that shows you how to split the case?

I think there are multiple engine rebuild threads here that will help. Even one on the 650 would help since it's the same basic engine design.
