I'm working on it. slowly.
every now and then i wonder if it's worth it. but, then i just find myself putting more and more money into it...

fun project bike when it isn't frustrating as all hell.
I did find a sweet tank for it.
now i need all the plastics and a few other missing odds and ends. it would be nice to see it move without pushing it.

One piece at a time. You'll get there..as long as you don't give up.

Nevermind the tank and plastics, get the carbs right and the motor right, THEN get your tank and plastics.
It will be so motivating to know you have a running machine that needs plastics, not a project that needs everything and still doesn't run...

Hey the parts and the knowledge are out there. You can do this....

yeah. the fun part is that when i bought it i drove it straight home. when i got there i realized the fuel take was trashed. while waiting for a new tank i just started taking stuff apart and finding new things to fix... now im neck deep in restoration projects. but its a fantastic learning experience. especially with help from every one here.

actually, fourtyhourdays, your dining room experience gave me the encouragement to keep working on this beast.  beer

@Coffee break...

I know the engine is solid. the only real thing i have to worry about is second gear. i can't tell if its the clutch or the transmission. from what i can tell, which isn't a whole lot, it seems like the clutch is slipping back to first. we shall see.
that is a good method of rebuilding. thanks for the tip. i'll try to not let the money i dont have to burn a hole in my pocket.

If it is actually slipping back into first gear, than it sounds like a transmission problem.  The clutch would cause it to slip in gear, not actually shift gears.

The more pieces that come off, the more pieces that need to come off.

And that..and that too, oh just a teeny little cleaning there, check that and we're done, oh, lookie there, that can't be left like that...the next thing you know it takes 7 hours to do a 30 minute chain/sprockets change.

I would get that second gear thing worked out before I spent a single dime on it, is it falling from second back to first or is it just going to a false neutral? Is the shift lever hitting anything? Does it shift positively in every other gear?

Every other gear works fine. i dont know what the term "shifts positively" refers to.
i only rode the bike once and i remember about 5 to 8 seconds after shifting into second the bike would rev up as well as speed up. but then it would return to normal. after a moment it would do the same thing again. it felt like it was going into first and then returning to second. after shifting to 3rd everything was fine. all the way up to 5th. because of this i dont think its the shift lever.
i even tested 1st and 3rd at the same rpm range as 2nd. but they responded normally.
once i get the carbs situated i will know more about second. til then i feel i can only speculate...

i should also say that i know the sprockets and chain need to be replaced as well as the rear wheel bearings.
the front sprocket, i think, has a worn down tooth or something... i'm just going to replace the whole set.

True, get your carbs clean and try another ride. What do you mean "the bike would rev up as well as speed up. but then it would return to normal." what's normal? Manual motorcycle transmissions aren't like worn out automatic car transmissions, they can't slip from one gear to another, if the detent on the shifter is bad it may be possible for it to slip out of a gear but it usually only throws you into a false neutral, and it would do it on every gear not just one. Did it grind at all?
