Although not really relevant on this thread, it would help to know which Nighthawk you ride.  There are several theads on this subject, but here's what I bring on every ride (stays with the bike):

1.  Sharp locking knife.
2.  Good qualtiy multi-tool.
3.  10 mm, 12 mm, 14 mm, and 17 mm open end wrench
4.  spark plug socket and a t-bar for loosening/tightening, spare set of spark plugs.
5.  Cresent wrench
6.  needle nose vice grips
7.  slotted and phillips (#2) screwdriver.
8.  decent set of metric allen wrenches and a set of torx wrenches.
9.  my slime air pump with tire plugs
10. cheap 12v test light
11.  few wire nuts, crimp style electrical connectors, about 6 feet of 14 gage wire, zip ties, duct tape, small can of WD-40, a good t-shirt rag, 2 high-quality bungee cords, package of J/B Weld, and a small assortment of metric screws, bolts, and nuts.

Opinions vary, but after 2 1/2 years and about 30,000 miles, this has taken care of everything that has broken on the road thus far, and gotten me home safely.  I figure if something much more major than that breaks on the road, I'm going to need parts that I don't have.  YMMV.

I'm usually not a fan of multi tools, but I came across a Schrade multi tool.  This is a higher dollar, USA made tool that's actually usable.  I'd pass on the cheap ones and also these don't replace combo or box wrenches.  Expect a good one to run about $30 or more.

Ditto on the length of wire!

Check the size of the pics, I have to use a 1.2mp cell phone camera and then sometimes have to trim it down.
