Like any other weekend I pulled the bike out of the garage to fire it up and like any other weekend the bike started on the first push of the button but stayed grumpy and difficult for a while as it always is. However, what was different about today though was the unusually warm weather. It was 9:30AM and the Sun was already beating down on us. "Hmm, I think I'll cook myself in the black ATGATT if I ride today...and it'll probably get hotter later". Went back in the house and started picking up the mess in the 'office'. As I was cleaning I came across my old 8mm Sony HandyCam - it wasn't the video camera that was the cool discovery of the week instead it was the CaseLogic case that the camera was in. If you read my last thread I was looking for a small inexpensive tail bag..."hmm, I gotta try this on, I know I have a few bungee cords laying around" I said to myself and headed back outside. 5 mins later it was on the bike and I had a place to carry small items like my small digital camera. Alright time for a 'shakedown ride' with the new tail bag :)

I took off on a 30mile loop near my house...it's called Santiago Canyon and it's famous for it's beautiful views, wildlife, mountain lions and fires in the summer. Enjoy the pics and hopefully this will give you guys a slightly different perspective of "the OC".

It was a hot but fun ride, everytime I stopped to take pics I felt really warm and uncomfortable but as long as I was moving it wasn't all that bad. Next time I'll have to remove the liner from my jacket and pants. I know...newbies  Hap1

Looks like really enjoyable riding without much traffic. Bike looks good too!  Barbed wire scared me tho...pebbles and stones look slippery.

Looks like it was a great little ride Russ, and nice pics! Looks like you've gotten some things done to the bike since I was on here last...lookin good man! I'm also glad to see you seem to have gotten past a lot of the nerwousness about riding and such. How's that new wind screen working out? I really like they way it looks on there and might look into one for mine.

Yay, Russ! The hills are so green right now! Did you stop at Cook's Corner? (for non-locals, CC used to be a scary biker hangout in the boonies, but now civilization caught up with it and it's trendy for OC motorcyclists to stop in on their weekend latte run, see non-latte pic)

This weekend was too booked for me to get out and ride, but it sure was a nice one, wasn't it?

And he's not kidding about the mountain lions. A couple of years ago a mountain biker was killed very close to this route and partially eaten, then the same cat attacked a woman mountain biker and if her riding partner hadn't pulled on her feet and screamed while the lion pulled on the woman's head, the lion would've killed her too. A couple of other MBers came along and they all managed to scare the lion into dropping the woman. Trackers killed the lion later that evening. Life in the OC can be dangerous!

Thanks guys! I know it's not a multi-day ride report nor were the pics planned in any way, I just randomly pulled over snapped the pics and rode off. While they came out nice they just don't do justice to the full panoramic views from the bike.

Fishmeister, I think the barbed wires are to keep the larger wild-life off the street and to keep the even larger wildlife (squids) in check  Hap1 . There are some sections where there's a sharp drop-off without guard rails etc. I get butterflies in my stomach when I ride past that section watching the drop off 3 feet to my right. The gravel is soo slippery, I never knew! I had to be very careful getting off the road into the gravel turn-outs, I couldn't slow down too much or some cager behind me could take me out and I couldn't go in too fast or the bike wouldn't stop and I'd become a permanent scarecrow on those barb-wires. Pulling out was tricky too. Luckily there's about a foot or so of pavement between the white line and the gravel and the traffic's usually light.

Tim, it sure is a nice area to ride and that's why it's famous with the bikers and sports cars. There's a bar/restaurant at the entrance called Cook's Corner...it's THE hang out for the bikers. It's got good amounts of twists and turns and the speed limit's usually 55mph...or supposed to be  DirtDOG

Buzz, I'm still getting over the nervousness. It's weird that I get nervous thinking and talking about it but once I'm on the bike I'm alert but fine.

Lindy, thanks! I hope you're recovering well! when I get nervous about riding I often think about your incident. You're an experienced and careful rider but it still happened to you.

Shaun, welcome back! how was Thailand? Where did ya go, Phucket? I did add a few things to the bike; the GPS mount, windshield, new tires, seat cushion and tailbag. I'm quite happy with everything I've added so far as it enchanced the bike over what it was. There might be better products out there but since I don't have experience with anything comparable I can't really offer a comparison.

Nice ride report Russel. I'm with you I don't like that gravel. We have lots of sand on the roads here where it snows and its no fun for a while in the spring.

Thanks guys. I hope the weather clears up for you guys in the snow areas.

Moedad, glad to see that you're familiar with the route too :) Maybe we'll run into each other one of these days!

Nice hills, nice roads.  Where are all the potholes?
I totally thought that bag was actual motorcycle luggage.  Fits well, works.
Gravel can be really dicey, but it does reinforce the slow and steady ethos.  I dropped a month-old bike trying to merge off gravel so it always makes me nervous.
I'm snowed in for a few days here...
