hello,  i will thank everyone in advance for their help in this matter. i  spent the past 3 months restoring a 84 blue/black nighthawk s. fun project. i was ready to take the first ride, when i heard the dreaded "SNAP" in the case.  i learned quick what it was. little did i know i had to dissassemble the crankcase to get at it. oh well. what i diddnt realize how hard it was to find this part.  28161-mjo-005.  can anyone steer me in the right direction, so i can get my cool ride on the road? thanks brian in minnesota. smiler smiler

What is the part, exactly?

edit: I ask only because I cannot find that part number you've listed in any parts fiche I've tried to search within... i mean, it isn't even listed.

edit again!: Are you sure it wasn't part number 210595-001?  That is the cam chain, which I guess doesn't really help if it was in fact the starter chain the snapped.

You can always push start it if it was the starter chain, I guess.

I think the starter chain on this bike is a big deal and you can't run without it. Also it requires splitting the cases to replace it.

HOWEVER I have heard of many success stories with installing a linked chain to replace the cam chain. It's not common but it is done, with careful work. Maybe it can go for the starter chain too.

I may be parting out a 700S very soon, let me know if you don't get what you need.

when will you be parting out the 700s?  i would take the alt/starter to crank chain as soon as you can get at it. Brian.

Waiting for the boss to decide if he wants to rebuild or part out. I'm all for the rebuild, but for him it may not be worth it, and the bike may make more in pieces.

I have to do a blown up 88 Suzuki GSXR1100 first and it's complete, will take a couple weeks....trust me, if I get to part out a Nighthawk, I'll link everyone to the site, but I can't do favors (other than ship you guys' first  deal) , of course you all wouldn't ask me to rob my boss like that, the little bike shops are really struggling right now....

This bike has some hard, hard wear on the motor, I will need to be very careful about checking the specs on any part we offer from the motor. Keep your eyes open for a good chain and jump if you find it; I'll let everybody know if I have the rare duty of parting out a Nighthawk.
