Questions on 1985 Cb700 Nighthawk
« on: May 23, 2016, 05:20:45 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I'm curious how the '85 CB700SC compares to the '83 Cb650 in terms of common issues, and parts availability.
One big issue on the CB650 is being prone to chain tensioner failure and the parts don't exist anymore.
Same for the CB700?

Also I couldn't find new carb boots (either engine or airbox side) for the CB650. Same for the 700?

I have a lead on a 700 that looks very clean, but "needs" work. Not afraid of these carbs at all, but I am of the engine.

Thanks for any insight.

I don't know of any cam chain tensioner issues on the 700S.  The only internal issues that seem to crop up are breakage of the starter chain, possibly due to excessive flexing during periods of overuse, and some play in the #3 cylinder bearings -- although that's just my own theory.
Carb boots and other parts are generally pretty readily available via eBay and parts suppliers.

I rebuilt an 85 cb650  and an 84 cb700.  For me parts availability was about the same.  Regular replacement parts are available.  Major parts like tanks, plastics etc are not being made anymore so eBay.  I've seen new carb boots around.  I'd have to look where.

:snork:my cam chain was rattling..the tensioner on the 700sc cannot be manually adjusted but its not an expensive job at a small bike shop....never go to main stealers. Theyll have your pants down. Mine is used regular and no real issues. 40.000 miles but regular oil changes help
