"Lethal Threat" makes commuting so much nicer.

I recently picked up a 1982 CB750SC that I found on Craigslist for $700 with 9128 miles on it.  The previous owner started converting it into a chopper, but decided to sell it.  It has a few issues that I am slowly working through, but for a first bike I think I did ok.

My biggest concern right now is the poor fuel mileage I am getting.  I have been told it is probably because of the changes the previous owner made, but not sure everything he did.  He obviously put Kerker exhaust, most likely rejetted, and for all I know he might have put 900 cams in it.

hello and welcome to nighthawk forums lethal_threat, i would have bought it for that price. you may be right though. if he didn't rejet the carbs that will cause problems with the stock carbs. i would look for a stock tank, airbox, and side covers

It is a pretty cool tank.......for a chopper frame.  It is really too small for the Nighthawk.

Um, what is this disappointing mileage?  They're not as efficient as more modern bikes.

Thank heavens you got it before the PO started gunking up the handling.  Despite the hideous gap, the seat looks comfortable enough.  I have a strong dislike for tanks that repel your knees, but it is ... different.  Oh yeah, how many gallon(s?) does that tank take at fill-up time?

Can a 650 owner tell me if the cylindrical things behind the carburetors are stock?  Or they foam air filters?

They look like pod filters (oiled foam). I put some on my '86 700S. Not my best idea ever.

Hopefully you can get her fixed up, and it'll result in a steal in Craigslist.

While I can appreciate the work that goes into choppers, I don't understand the appeal. But to each their own I guess.

Nevertheless, welcome to the forums.

I am getting a little bit over 20 mpg, and the tank only takes 2 gallons at fill up.  It gets me around my area, but I want to be able to go on longer cruises.  As for the seat, it is a HD Sportster seat and is very comfortable.  I actually just did a little work on reducing the gap a bit.

Just wanted to update this.  My bike is now charging, going wide open throttle like it was meant to, and getting 38 mpg on longer cruises.   ricky

Holds twice as much, and I am averaging around 35 mpg now that everything is fixed.

The auction I bought it off of said it was either off a CB900C or CB750C.
