New member, picked up my Hawk today.
« on: September 15, 2016, 10:39:09 AM »
Hello everyone.  Kunphushun here, sound it out phonetically, Kun for short.

I've just come home from picking up my third bike, first Nighthawk.  Previously I've had a 2006 GSXR 600 that was decked out, and a 2003 Suzuki Volusia 800.  Between the two I've put over 50,000 miles on two wheels.  I rebuilt the volusia after an unfortunate oil out situation that included a locked up rear tire at 65mph, that was not fun.

Anywho, I've been reading through the forum and you guys are full of good info, and a little bit "cultish," about these bikes.  That tells me I will love it here.  yaaaah3

The bike:
93 Nighthawk 750 with a 98 engine, all stock, but well worn.
Nearly every bolt on the bike is loose.
The wiring is nasty.
Plastics are busted.
Carbs are leaking some nasty old fuel.
Tires are from 2010.
Everything on the handle bars is loose.
It does appear to have mini gauges.

The plan is to strip it to the frame and start from scratch.  I will have tons of questions, but maybe reading here will answer most of them.

Pics are cool!

Welcome and congrats!! Hey its got the vance and hines going for it.  Careful with those pod filters.  These engines favor the use of the airbox far more.  Pods make tuning a nightmare, from what ive read.

Thanks for the welcome Henry.  The V&H pipes will be long gone once Im done.  I cannot stand my bikes/cars/self looking like the 1000's of others out there.  I promise when Im done this will be a one of a kind Hawk for sure.

I did read on the forums about the CV carbs on this bike and them not liking the pod filters.  I fully intend to return this bike to proper running attire, including airbox.  When Im done it will have to be reliable enough for my 120 mile round trip to work every day.  I dont like hiccups when riding.

EDIT:

Went outside to offload the bike and move it under the shed.  Two of the pod filters fell off while moving it.  Stuffed paper towels in the holes because Louisiana bugs suck.  I cannot wait to get this thing torn apart.

I noticed some paint peeling and rust on the frame.  Looks like we are starting from scrizzatch!

Thanks Max.  I have a plan, hopefully it doesn't break the bank!  I'm starting a new job on the 26th and it should double my pay or more, so that will help.

I really wish I could start on this thing, but we are in the middle of trying to save money to purchase a forever home.  In the mean time Im researching the bike and figuring out exactly what I am to do when the time comes.

Congrats and start tearing that thing apart.  This site is very helpful and there are a lot of people that have gone through the same thing you are about to do.  Just ask questions and good luck.
