After a few weeks of shopping and running all over the place to look at over priced turd's I finally found a nice dual sport. I found a 1997 Suzuki DR 650 that was not originally sold until 2001 as a 4 year left over, (shocked me too). The owner purchased it and drove it about 40 miles before he proceeded to take off all the street legal necessities, turn signals, brake light, mirrors, passenger foot pegs etc. He also had removed the original tires and had dirt only knobbies installed. He then put a total of 238 miles on it and then let it sit for a year before I just bought it. I went to see it as he was charging the battery and started reinstalling the lights in his driveway. The battery was not taking a charge so we jump started the bike so I could at least hear it run, It fired right up and runs great. I took the bike home and now just need to reinstall the rest of the lights, maybee get a battery (its on charger now), change oil and ready to go. I paid $1200.00 for it. Here are some pics and I'll update with more when I get it together and cleaned up.

My brother had a DRZ400...I've always like the DR's.

DoubleH, congratulations! Nice find. I used to own a 1990, kickstart only, however
the DRs run really well and are highly regarded. I was looking for a DR or a KLR when
I stumbled across my DL650, got the title for it today by the way. I remember when
I first changed the oil on the DR, I was shocked there was no oil filter on it, only a
screen. Enjoy and keep the front wheel on the ground!

Thanks M98, this one is electric start, and it has a regular filter, I just ordered 2 filters and some bolts and washers that are missing from when the previous owner took off all the lights.

Look's Identical to the 93 DR I had. The only difference I see is the Speedometer.

That is really nice.  The only thing I've always wondered is, why did the manufacturer go with purple around that time?  I think Kawi was going with teal around that time too?  Weird.   I'd have paid a lot more for that one though.  Looks like a great bike and I'm sure it's going to be a lot of fun.  Get a ride report up there when you get a chance.  I look forward to seeing it in action.

Thanks Beer, I already do love it. Have only had it out a couple of times, but I think I may be riding the suzuki more than the nighthawk. Looking into going on some dual sport rides next year.

I'm going to have to disagree here. Keep that front wheel off the ground! They last a lot longer that way.
