I am a newb so please don't laugh, but I have an 82 honda nighthawk 450 and i don't know what the bars are claled that attach to the rear shock tops and then back to where the rear turn signals go. Are these bars supposed to sit flush against the frame when screwed in? I bought my bike with a back rest on it. I took it off and all of the spacers etc. Do those spacers need to be in there. Also now my bolts are too long. Do I need shorter bolts and mount this thing tight to the bike?

From your description I believe you're talking about the grab bars that are on either side of the tail piece correct?? If the spacers were on the inside of the grab bar, then they need to be there when the bar itself is mounted. As for the bolts, you can replace them with ones the right length, or add a spacer to the bolt on the outside of the grab bar, as long as the bolt gets tight and the grab bar doesn't move it will be ok.

Thanks Roj for the respnse. Yes that is correct.

I can't remember if the spacers were there or not. Can anyone with 450 tell me if there should be spacers on the grab bars?

I searched grab bars but I think they are an add on I am trying to find the name of the original factory arms that go across here. They are two separte arms on eitherside of the tail piece!

They are called R.H and L.H Grip bars in the parts fiche I have. It doesn't appear the spacers go behind the bars. I think they may have been used inbetween the backrest and the grip bar. If you go with shorter bolts you won't need the spacers, and if you keep the longer bolts you'll need to add a few washers or something to make up the space the backrest takes up when bolted on.
