First, let me say how helpful this forum has been to me in my effort to restore my '82 450 Nighthawk. I will post pics whenever i make some reasonable progress.

The Question is I really do not like the 450 muffler at all it is too bugle like. I really like the 80's nighthawk 550 muffler. So how hard would it be to put a 550 muffler on the 450? Or is this an impossibility pondered by a newb only.

depends on if the 550 muffler will slip on the power chamber and if any mods need to be made to bolt it to the bike

The general rule is that mods done after the collector don't typically require re-jetting, etc.  You just need to be able to make the parts fit.  Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to offer you any help with fitment.

I do know of several guys running stock Sportster mufflers on their Magnas with minimal modding.  Not sure how they work work on a Nighthawk though.  You can often find stock Sportster mufflers free or cheap when people upgrade their exhausts.

True, however most of the back pressure is obtained in the collector.  Slip-on style mufflers provide very little back pressure to the exhaust.

I'm not saying it isn't possible but most times re-jetting isn't required when changing slip-on muffs after a collector.

It looks like a stock muffler, very similar to the one on my 85 650.

Do you (or anyone else) have an idea if this muffler would work on my 82 450 nighthawk?

Thanks Again!
