My bike will only start in Neutral, is this common? 84 cb650. I have stalled it a few times and in those times it'd be nice to start it in another gear. If this is how it is supposed to be, how do I check what's wrong?

A very high probability that your clutch switch is bad. When you pull in the clutch you should be able to start it in ANY gear. Look near the pivot point of the lever to see the switch. It may just need to be cleaned.

So you're saying that the 84 is only neutral start? Crappy... But if it were like the other models, the sensor would be by the clutch lever on the handle bar? Am I pickin up what you guys are layin down? Thanks for the help so far.

Look at the item number 7 in the following drawing; http://www.discounthondaparts.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=123888&category=MOTORCYCLES&make=HONDA&year=1984&fveh=2959That is the clutch switch to allow engine starting while in gear. It is for the 1984 CB650sc, which has the same parts as the 1983 and the rest. SO, the switch is there. I bet the wiring is also there. I do not have my manual with me, but tomorrow afternoon I will look for the wiring diagram. Good luck getting it working. Ride Safely

is this normal for the 83 550?
mine only starts in neutral. when i bought mine i looked at tw odifferent 550's the same day. and both sellers told me it only starts in neutral.
it wont start in gear for me, even with the clutch pulled.

this goes for any bike. if it PO says it only starts in neutral, that's cause the switch when out and he/she (for you 550 owners :D jk) didn't know what to do, and realized it started just fine in neutral, so they called it good at that and decided that's the only way to do it from then on. probably a really cheap easy fix.

+1 on the above, If there is a neutral safety switch, theres gotta be a clutch safety switch, Bikes arent like manual shift cars with a simple H pattern shifter, If youre in a higher gear, its a few movements to neutral. If you gotta get it moving quick, a few movements is too many. The wiring diagram shows a green, and a green/red wire on the clutch switch. green being ground. If you jump out the switch, youll be able to start it in any gear, just be mindful if you dont have the clutch out.

One thing to look for is if you have fat grips you will need to put a shim on the lever to make contact with the switch if the switch is good. Look to see if the lever is moving the switch. I had to add a shim to my lever cuz the fat grips wouldn't allow the lever that final bit of travel.

There is is spot on the lever that I put some JB weld on then filed it till it didn't smash the switch apart. If you look you will see where the contact point is.

I had a bike that had clutch switches fail every year or so. While the new one was on order, I'd just pull the connector and short it out with a paper clip or a piece of wire. At that point, nothing stops accidental starting while in gear with the clutch out, so if you have any concerns about that, don't do it.
