I currently own and love a 1985 650 Nighthawk. Just recently though, I came across a 1981 CB900F for sale. I love the styling of this bike, and I'm on the fence as to whether or not I like it better than the NightHawk (I can only own one, sadly). So I've done some research, and although the CB900 is bigger, a bit faster, and has better stopping power, I can't really determine too many more advantages of one over the other. Is it just styling? Is one bike actually superior? Has anyone ridden both? Does the CB900 handle worse or better? Is the Nighthawk more comfortable on longer rides? Is the Nighthawk significantly more low maintenance? Any thoughts either way would be appreciated.

Thanks.

hello and welcome to NHF klawrenc. i have hever ridden a 650 nighthawk but i do have a 900f motor in my '79 750k frame so i cannot compare the two. the 900 would have a hp ant tq advantage over a 650. i didn' t think it would be much difference between the 750 and 900 motor but there was

I can't comment on the 900 but if I come across a cb1000 custom in good shape I'll dump the 650 for it in a heart beat. Mainly for size and comfort.

I have a 1983 CB1000 Custom and had a 1985 Cb650 NH-

They are really very different machines.

The 650 is sportier and lighter, easier to flick in twisties. The Cb1000 will do what you tell it, but it is a larger bike.

And the 650 is quicker, probably give the 900C a run for the money.

I don't know man. I might be tempted by a 900F. Nice looking bikes. I'm sure they handle just fine. Should stop better with dual front and disk rear. I would be tempted by such a bike if I had not just put a lot of time and money into setting mine up.

I figured the 1000 would not be as nimble as the 650. What I was thinking is that since I picked up my Suzuki Dr 650 (which does quite a bit of what I can do on the nighthawk), I'd consider the 1000 for longer touring type rides.

I just looked it up.  Nice looking bike except for the wheels.  This is all web data so it may not be accurate.  I just tried to find the major differences so not everything is listed. The suspension set up looked different but I couldn't figure the details out.

hp
650 - 72
900 - 95

transmission
650 - 6 speed
900 - 5 speed

drive
650 - shaft
900 - chain

tank size
650 - 3.2 gallons (or something like that)
900 - 5.2 gallons

brakes -
650 rear - drum
900 rear - disc

weight -
650 434lbs.
900 573lbs.

Sounds like a bigger, beefier bike to me.  Can't find out if it has hydraulic clutch or the cam tensioner that the the 650 has but the 900 does have a chain meaning a bit more maintenance.  I think the 900 will slurp gasoline, seems like the low 40's was about average.  I'm getting 50-55 mpg with my 650.

I think you should ask for a test ride.  That will tell you if it is the bike for you real quick.
