Hi I'm new here - amazing just found this after searching hi and low for NH forums for 3 months now!

My question is can nitrile o'rings withstand the temperatures of the oil pipes in teh cylinder head.

I know the service temp of nitrile is up to ~ 275F but i think then cyclinder head may get to excess of 300F.  Not sure if the oil is cooled in this portion lowering it enough to use nitrile as a replacement (which i have on hand).

Does anyone know if nitrile can be used?  Is it commone to use nitrile in cylinder head of air cooled cycles?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul and  welcome
Got any pics of your bike?  biker_h4h1

I'm not sure if the nitrile o'rings will work, as the cyl head on these bikes does get hotter then 300*F.
I'm not sure of the exact temps these engines reach, but I've heard its around 800*F. Again, don't quote me on that temp...its just what I've heard when shooting the breeze with other motorcyclists.

I know when I got my pipes powder coated, the guy was a little bit concerned that the hi temp powder coat would work because its only rated for 1000-1100*F. So far I've had no issues with heat on them.

Thanks.

I guess this time i better just go and get the Viton orings and will refrain from the temptatoin to put in nitrile of which i allready have.

Uhhh those orings are so hard to find because they are JIS (japan industrial standard) metric sizes and the only place i've seen them before is in a complete kit for $90.

I"ll post some pictures after i get it back together - right now it wouldn't look very nice.

Thanks - hey and this is cool that there is a technical sight for CB's - likely most of my posts will be there.
