Saw this on another forum. Is this even legal? Most likely legal. It really depends on the state, total length, what's being towed, total weight, trailer brake capability, and whether it's a bumper tow or 5th wheel. Operationally that setup is no big deal since the ancient camper doesn't weigh much and the motorcycle/trailer weighs nothing. Triple tow in some states is a no no even if it's a kids tricycle and two red-flyer wagons. Bumper tows are more restrictive than 5th wheels. FWIW, triple tow is a PITA since you can't back up more than about 10 feet without making a proper mess of things.

Yep, believe it or not it's legal to triple tow in 13 states if I'm not mistaken. As bumblebee says though there are some states that require the first towed vehicle being a 5th wheel. I saw a guy in CO with an old beater Ford Ranger loaded to the hilt with firewood towing an old travel trailer and a jet ski behind that. That setup was bucking and bouncing so bad I'm amazed the guy could keep his lunch down for more than 2 blocks.

Wow, that's one hell of a set up. I assume you have at least a class 3 hitch on the front? Does it have a ramp to load the scoot up?

Oh, if only it ran. It's an '85 as well. My uncle got it for free and I'd like to help him fix it. Just need to find the time. Leftfield, what made you go with the ZETEC? Just wondering. Think you could do an install thread?

Class 3 hitch. Has a ramp that is supposed to be stored on the front of the carrier. I think I put it in the back of the truck for the photo.

Think you could do an install thread? Haven't done the install yet, as a matter of fact, I have seriously reconsidered doing it at all. The attraction of the zetec was dealing with the Bostig conversion kit. They have their stuff together, and it's by far the best put-together conversion kit for the do-it-yourselfer. So why am I reconsidering? Because I had the chance to drive another Vanagon that had received the Subaru 2.5 conversion. WOW! About 35 more horses than the zetec, and more torque. The drawback to the Subi conversion is the need to find a wrecked Subaru to pull an entire engine-wiring harness-computer module from, and then also the figure-it-out-yourself nature of doing a Subi install. What's wrong with the Westy? Engine blown, or just not running for some other reason? Those 1.9L waterboxers are actually pretty robust, unfortunately the head gaskets are the weak point if the coolant is not swapped out and maintained.

It ran when it was parked 5 years ago... So potentially a lot, or maybe just a weekend project. Then you have to make it roadworthy. And clean out the mouse poop. Depending on how much your willing to spend, Vanaru apparently makes a good Subie conversion, but they don't have much info on their site.

I needed a break from camping so I, um, shall we say, went camping for a few days.
The current count as of today is 1,669 consecutive camping days.
