1986 Nighthawk CB700SC Red White and Blue Your Opinions Please
« on: November 09, 2017, 07:59:25 PM »
After catching a so called seller trying to run a scam I found a local 1986 Nighthawk CB700SC Red White and Blue for sale that has 22k miles on it. I'm going to see the bike in person on Saturday. What should I be looking for on this particular version of the Nighthawk?

These bikes are pretty robust, the only semi-common problems the 700's have are a fairly weak second gear and some people have broken starter chains, both of which require a full tear down to replace. The 84's sometimes have a crank seal issue that makes the ignition cover leak but they fixed that in 85. Apart from that just check the usual stuff you'd check with any other bike.
I'm parting out a 92 750 in the for sale section

If any of the plastics are damaged they can be very spendy to replace.  Decal kits are available for that year/colour scheme so it wouldn't be the end of the world if you needed to use parts from a different year.
Listen closely to the engine when it's running.  The inline 4 engine seems to have a tendency to under-lubricate the #3 rod bearing, so there can sometimes be a bit of a clunk or tap towards the right hand side of the engine.
I've also recently read of a few people having problems with the cam chain tensioner.  That's a new one for me -- mostly that seems to happen with the 650.  Any problems in this area will be signalled by the sound of the chain rattling.

Make sure that the original exhaust is in place, or a reputable aftermarket one is there (Kerker, MAC, etc.).  If it has pod-style air filters or the exhaust is chopped up or just missing its baffles, walk away immediately.

Kind of takes me back to my own RWB nighthawk.  Man, that was one fine motorcycle.

Nice looking bike.  I still have a chin fairing like that laying around somewhere.

The chin fairing is not original equipment.  It's not even made by Honda.

I bought that from HP, after a spell I decided not to use so I sold to someone on the old NH site.
