I have been riding for four seasons now and usually stay on my bike as long as I can.  The one thing that always kills me is the cold.  I can handle it okay except for my hands.  I've tried all kinds of different gloves and muffs that cover the grips but nothing has worked nearly as well as my new Olympia Mustang Gloves.  These things are amazing, I've been riding in 25-35 degree weather and my hands are doing great.  The gloves are bulky but that is the only negative I can think of.  Everything else about them is fantastic, they are flexible, well made, very cheap and most importantly warm.  I can't say enough good things about these gloves.  They cost under $20.

I don't like the bulky gloves. It's the lack of feeling for the controls that gets me. Instead I just got regular leather gloves and installed heated grips and hand guards. Have yet to use the grips on high.

These look great, Fishball!

I wonder if the '83 650 electrical system would handle the heated grips? Sound very toasty, but I'm leary of overtaxing the quirky charging system... Now that it's getting down into the 30s, my fingers turn white within 5 miles of riding!  umph

You could try battery powered heated gloves like these
http://www.gerbing.com/Products/Gloves/hybridGlove.html, or thesehttp://www.12voltclothing.com/HEATED_GLOVES.html but those are more than I paid for my leather jacket or my textile.

Yes it will!  claps
2 weeks ago I have finished installing Symtec heated grips on my '83 650 (the year with lower alternator output) and so far I haven't had a problem.
I do put it on battery tender once every 1-2 weeks, but I checked a few times after my commute, and the battery was at 12.8V.

I plan on doing a write up, but so far didn't get to it.

Go with this setup and use whatever grip you like. The advantage is that when you wear out the grips you can change them without having to buy the heater part again.
