get him a razor kick scooter. the origional brand name razor with the small wheels. it makes a difference. that thing gives the feel of stability from side to side balance with confidence to put the feet on the groung when needed. i started him on that at 2 and would ride on it with him asking if he could feel the center when we balanced, then i held him by the shoulders so he could feel the balance for himself and soon i could feel him countering it on his own. he was ready. the bike was the same hold onto the rear of the seat and let hin feel the balance and wait till he starts to counter it for himself and then its letting him go for it little at a time till he rides off without knowing your not even there. next is the very important step of brakeing. teach the importance of brakes and useing them to slow or stop. this took the most practice. careful of hills and crouded parking lots or anyplace where he could be scared and lose control. they tend to focus take aim and crash into what they are looking at. hope this helps and let us know how it goes.
