I just picked up an '83 CB650SC last week, and am slowly working out all of the gremlins before spring arrives. I am stumped on the rear brake light though. I've done all of the obvious(to myself anyways) checks to try and find the problem, but came up short. the bulb works. the switch works. there is power to the switch. the front brake switch lights it up, but I can't seem to get the back brake to do so.
can anyone steer me in the proper direction?
many thanks in advance!!!
and just for funsies, here is a pic of the monster ...

Have you checked the brake pedal switch with an ohm meter?

Check to see if theres a spring between the pedal and the switch and that its in adjustment to where it will pull the switch enough to trigger it. The switch is on the right side below the battery box.

Yeah the rear brake switch is usually adjustable. If you pull that spring and the brake light comes on, you can turn the plastic nut on the switch to make the linkage smaller and thus activate the brake switch when you push the pedal.

Yes, I get continuity when the pedal is pressed down, so the switch works, and is properly adjusted.

So far you say:
Brake light comes on when front lever is pulled
Brake light does not come on when rear lever is pushed
Rear brake switch makes & breaks when pushed & pulled
Sounds like you need to check the wiring between the rear lever switch and the taillight. (check to see if any wiring actually exists)
Since your bike is obviously customized in the tail area, there is a good chance there is an issue in the wiring between the switch and taillight. Follow the wiring between the switch and light, see if there is a cut, etc.

Your bike looks cool and Continuing Green's theory, if wiring looks good, I'd check the bulb socket with an ohm meter, and ultimately replace the bulb even if it checks good. My turn signal bulb checked good, but didn't work until I replaced it - oxidation on the bulb.

got it figured it out about an hour ago. whoever re-wired the bike before I picked it up, must have forgotten to label wires and plugs as he went, or who really knows. Either way, he had the fuel gauge wired to the brake switch and the the taillight was hooked up to the sender unit in the tank. or something along those lines. either way, everything works now. I just have to get a new choke cable, because the one bikebandit sent me was for an '82 machine, which is not what I have. its a good thing there is still snow on the ground here. Thanks for everyone's help!!!

So the fuel gauge tells you when you're stopping deliberately and the brake light tells everyone else when you're going to stop whether you want to stop or not. Clever.
