Well, today I'm happy! Some of you may recall my introduction as a new member of the forum. I'm a new (older) rider and after taking the MSF course, purchased a nice, clean 1986 Nighthawk 650. It was a private sale from a neighboring state. When I took the bike to our DMV for inspection, they seized it because it had a tampered VIN. While nothing was stolen nor salvaged, they kept in nearly 4 months until they were satisfied the frame number was OK.

It took a lot of effort, required me to post a bond for 5 years but as if Wednesday, I finally got it registered! Today was a bit warmer (35 degrees) so I drove to the inspection building, strapped on my new leather jacket and helmet, gave it a good pre-ride inspection and fired it up.  It was a great ride home!

Perseverance pays off!

Now all we need is some warmer riding weather here in the Northeast.

Great Jbednarz, So you got it back! I am curious how is 650 different from 750 since you have both you are best person to ask. I guess 650 is better cruiser (6 gear, shaft drive, relazed sitting), must be better than 750 on highway. Let me know.

How is contessa project coming up?

Hi BP:

So far I've just ridden the 650 as the 750 remains at the dealer, waiting for warmer weather!

I will tell you though, the 650 is one smooth machine! Remember, I'm a new rider so my experience is limited but the 650 run and rides very smooth. I just took it apart to change the tires ( the previous owner replaced the rear which didn't match the front) so I installed two new Dunlops. I'm also overhauling the front calipers and replacing the front pads along with two fork seals.  I will do some paint touch up on the frame and will have it all back togther by the weekend. (forecast is for rain and snow so there is no rush!)

The Contessa is progressing although colder weather has slowed me some.  I have it apart and as soon as the weather warms, I will be doing some sheet metal clean up and painting. I was able to get the proper treatment chemicals for the leg shield (it is made from magniesium alloy).  The original engines needs work but my spare engine is in good shape.  I plan on doing a top end overhhaul (rings) and a good cleaning. I now have heat in the garage so work will progress more rapidly! Th ecylinder is chrome so now honing is required.

I drove the 650 home fron the DMV and it was a great ride. Can't wait until spring!
