Hello, This is my first post and it's going to be a good one. Story: A friend of mine had an 84' NightHawk 700S that keep popping out of 2nd gear under moderate to heavy throttle. After some research, I found that loosing 2nd gear was a common problem for this bike and the cause was due to the dog teeth wearing down on the shift collar. I offered to pull the motor apart and inspect the transmission. I took several photos of the process and even made a video. Link to Video: http://71.126.155.175:5190/nighthawk/700S_Transmission.zip (MPEG4, 40 megabytes) Link to Photos: http://71.126.155.175:5190/nighthawk/photoPreview: Let me know if you have any questions. Enjoy.

I was unable to get to the video but the photos were excellent. Were you able to solve your the transmission issue?

It appears that you're trying to host these pictures via a Verizon connection, and nothing's coming up for me. Any chance you could host them on Photobucket, imageshack, or any of 100 other free online hosting services?

The links are working for me.
I just heard that Verizon is having some major problem with service. In this area anyway.

I saved the zip file (40 mb) to my computer, then opened it, worked fine. Learned that this job is WAY above my pay grade.

Thanks for the replies. I got around to inspecting the shift forks today, and saw that the left shift fork, the one responsible for shifting second gear, was severely worn down. It seems that the shift fork was not pushing the shift collar all the way into 2nd gear, and therefore it would just pop out under load. This was the smoking gun I was looking for. Here's a video: http://71.126.155.175:5190/nighthawk/Shift_Fork.zip (8.2 megs, MPEG4) Here's a few pictures: For those having trouble viewing the pics and video, my http server program occasionally crashes and I'm also using a non-traditional port that your firewall may not like. I'll see what I can do about hosting the photos and videos at another location. I'll keep you updated. *Edited for typos.

Nope. I graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and I'm currently a manufacturing engineer. I spend most of my workday designing parts and machines with AutoCAD and when I get home I rebuild motors and transmissions for fun.

Hi Guys,
I just joined the forum, recently bought two 84 cb700sc myself. The running one has the same issue with second gear, I have not done anything yet. This post, video is pretty helpful. I just want to say thanks for putting that together. Bought both bikes together from the same guy, for dirt cheap. I have an old wrench buddy who is letting me buy his manual from him, what an odd manual to have right? This is my first bike although I have had my endorsement for years, I'm really excited about it all. Hopefully I'll be able to ride before the season is over (WA-OR area).

The only 'dark cloud' with the shift fork issue, is that I believe the shift forks are discontinued from Honda. So the only option when replacing is to go used.
