My 1986 CB450 has a bent shifter on it, so I ordered a new one from Honda, surprisingly they had one.  Problem is my original one has a screw that goes from top to bottom and tightens the shifter.  the new one does not have that.  In fact the new ones looks like it needs a bolt to hold the shifter on which would go in the front not the top screw like my old one.  Anyone have this problem and know of a fix or did I just get the wrong style Shifter?

Thank you detdrbuzzard,

I will have to take a picture for you.  The original has a solid end where the screw can go into.  the new one is hollow, more of a loop looking type end.  A screw can easily drop down and a bolt can be used to secure it, however I am not sure this was the intent.  When I get home tonight I will take a pic of the old and the new and post it.  If you are saying they are all the same I will have to guarantee then that my shifter is the wrong model.

Is the original really botched up?  I've had good luck bending them back into shape.

My BFH  gavel  came in handy...

The original isn't too bad.  I got it to confrom a little, but I am not happy with it.  I recently purchased a used one from the Salvage yard.  Got a good deal on it and after a nice stainless steel brushing , it looks good as new.  Problem now I am having is I can shift in to 1st, Neutral and 2nd gear, however I do not feel the 3rd or anything higher engaging.  Once I get the tank back on I will run it and see if the gears are engaging, if not I will have to repair that as well.

If your trying to shift up through the gears while the bike is on the centerstand you will probaly have to rotate the rear tire a little bit by hand to shift pass third. Just get to third then with your right hand rotate the rear wheel in a foward direction a few inches then shift to fourth etc. Dont worry its not unusual to not be able to shift through all the gears with out the bike moving.

jerjohn,

Thank you, yes the bike is on the center stand.  I will try the the method you described and see if that works.  Thanks again.
