2004 BMW R1100S This thing has been a blast for me, and I hope to be able to use it for what it's made for sometime - touring. Just need some more time. I just got new rubber put on it today! Matt

May you have a MUCH better ownership experience than I did. I never hated a bike, or a brand, as much as I did when I owned a R1150RT. Reliable my as$.
Sweet-looking bike...maybe one day I'll pick up an old Airhead....

This one is different to me. I've always wondered if the horizontally opposed heads cause your legs to get hot or burned? Also, the single sided swing arm looks scary or "delicate". Is this bike shaft drive? Most Beemers are I'm told.

I'm sorry to hear about your misfortune. I'm not sure what particular problems you were having with yours, but I do know that certain years and models have final drive and gearbox issues. I haven't heard anything but solid comments on the R1150RT though. I suppose all manufacturers are going to have lemons. I haven't had mine but four years, so I can't call it reliable yet either This one is different to me. I've always wondered if the horizontally opposed heads cause your legs to get hot or burned? No heat whatsoever - the heads, in the manner which they are installed, build up little to no heat actually. They are finned and have air tunnels built in, so they cool quite quickly. Your legs are about 5-6 inches away when riding. They look a little strange at first and take some getting used to, but it grew on me after a while and I like the look now. The single-sided swing arm is anything but delicate It's built like a tank, which unfortunately adds considerable weight to the bike. This tends to steer away the super-sport riders, but suits me just fine. It is a shaft drive, so the back wheel is attached just like a car wheel. Four lugs. I suppose most BMW bikes are shaft drive, but when you get into the newer sport bikes they make, they are all chain driven. Some of the sport tourers are belt driven. Matt

I always wondered why BMW had such WIDE motors. I never really liked the look of them.

Thanks for the comments! I always wondered why BMW had such WIDE motors. I never really liked the look of them. I didn't like them either at first, but it grew on me. Maybe I just forced myself to like it. It's design looks much like an airplane engine , which is what BMW first designed before anything else. Put a prop on the front of the block and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Fun fact: the roundel logo is a stylized airscrew, which I think means propeller.
I'm in the camp that finds Beemers to be way too quirky lately, but they do have uniqueness. This is likely a very refined sportbike. I find the boxer engine on a sporty machine weird, but I'm not the rider.

LOL - well, thanks but I'm definitely not a pro. I do like photography as a hobby and I'll say that I understand just enough to take a decent photo now and then. What you see here is more a result of the camera and lens than anything else. Thanks for the comment. Matt
