Now...what does this thing on the bike do?

I picked up this 82 750Sc for about $1000 a few weeks ago. All I had to do to get ready for the road was switch out the front brake pads, replace the battery, and replace the tach cable. My wish list includes finding a sissy bar/passenger backrest, removing a dent in the tank, and going all black on the tank and side panels. She's old, but she moves.

Thanks everyone! I've been out riding too much to detail, just too much fun. This weekend is supposed to rain for me, so it looks like I might be in the garage cleaning everything up instead of on the road. More pictures soon.
Those tires are less than a few months old. The previous owner threw them on, then decided to sell it. It was like he was throwing the bike at me!

fellow Jersey rider! That's a really neat engine guard with the crossbar in front of the exhaust. ...going all black on the tank and side panels. Am I the only one who digs the metallic decals? Hopefully this isn't groupthink flat black that you have in mind.

That is an exact replica of mine, only mine looks as if it went through a war. Is the seat original? Mine does not have the stitching in it, maybe it has been recovered - would explain the pain after 12 hrs of riding

You guys rock! The activity on this board is great. That is a super trapp exhaust. I was thinking about converting back to a 4 into 4 stock system, but the exhaust is still in good shape, so that will have to wait. As far as the paint, I want to keep the emblems, but remove the stripe on the side of the tank and side panels. Funny story! Yesterday I went riding with no destination in mind and as I got up to speed, the left side panel flew right off. I went back to get it, but it was smashed to pieces. I was able to save the emblem. Now I am thinking about getting some custom side panels made from aluminum or something like that. (Suggestions are welcome!) I think it would look great all black without the stripe and new custom side panels. The seat is original and as far as I can tell it has not been lowered, but this is the only nighthawk of that year I have ever seen, so I can't be sure.
Any suggestion on what to do to about replacing the side panels or getting customs made? I'm open to all ideas.

I don't know about custom side panels, but ebay is your friend for parts for these older machines. Just be patient and one will come up, but be prepared to fork over some $$$. Could you take a pic from the side? Like I said I used to have one and could tell you if its been lowered.

I'll try and get pics up in the next few days. Trust me when I say that the first picture is really a mirage. It doesn't look nearly as good in person. On a happy note, I was able to score a replacement gauge cluster the other day from ebay. I paid $80 and everything works! This cluster looks a 1000 times better than my beat up one did and it only had about 2000 or so more miles. I threw that on in about 30 minutes and was ready to role...that is when i lost my panel.

I went back to get it, but it was smashed to pieces. ....i've had that happen twice on 2 different bikes. One time I went back to find it and it was like yours.....smashed. The other time I was in the center lane of a 3 lane Interstate with heavy traffic @75mph.....I didn't even bother to go back and look for it.

Still working on those pictures guys, but it seems the detailing will have to wait... I went riding yesterday morning...beautiful weather, no where to really go, and no time limit imposed by the girlfriend, just be safe. I got about an hour of riding and wanted to stop for some water. Went into a local Wawa for some water. Came back out and started the bike just fine. Left the parking lot to a side street and made it to the stop sign to get back on the main road. Waited to go and when it was my turn, I stalled! Haven't done that in a while and figured it was no big deal. Tried to start it again and ... nothing. it was showing signs of a dead or dying battery, but the battery is only a few weeks old. I pushed it to the gas station next door and borrowed their battery charged (thankfully they had a 2 amp) and it started right up. I thought I might have overheated it or something. After running for a few minutes in neutral it died. While checking everything out, I noticed an oil leak coming from the head gasket towards the front of the engine. I added some oil to the proper amount (I was carrying a small amount of oil just in case) recharged it and left but kept the rpm's above 3k the whole time. I felt like an ass at stop lights, but she stayed running the rest of the way home that way. Now I have to figure out why she cut out and I have to replace the head gasket. 1) Any suggestions about the battery? 2) Any tips about the head gasket? I have never done that before.

Its likely the valve cover gasket, not the head gasket. The valve cover gasket is pretty easy, just make sure not to over torque the nuts on the top. If the old one doesn't have any gasket maker goo from a PO, its probably a 1-2 hour job at a leisurely pace.

Wow, I'm getting my part names all wrong on this one, I meant the cylinder cover gasket. As far as I know that could also be called the valve cover gasket. But thank you skramer360...that is exactly what I was hoping to hear. I gotta get the new gasket and find time after work to pick at this project, hopefully that will be done by this weekend. I'll have a picture up by wednesday of the oil leak. that way you guys will know just what I am talking about.
Sorry for all the confusion! Newb mistake!
Then I'll tackle this pesky electrical problem.

So I have gotten into replacing my cylinder head cover gasket...here's the thread http://nighthawk-forums.com/index.php/topic,5026.new.html#newAlso, I was hoping you guys could help me out trying to find a name for a certain hose I found to be needing of replacement. I removed the seat to take out the tank and I found a t-house coming from the air filter housing. This thing is in bad shape and needs to go, but I can't seem to find it on any schematic for original honda parts. I've bikebandit.com...is there anything better or does anyone know the name of this part? BTW...those tools that are tossed around like they aren't cared about...those are my pop's! No yelling at the newb!

You should just be able to replace #5 and be good. Matt
