I have always heard that those modular face-flip helmets were inherently weaker than a standard full face helmet. I know from experience that lexan face-shields break and will cut your face if they don't have any bottom (mouth area) support. It's one reason why I have been off the street for 15 years

No.   I ordered from Extreme Supply.   I'm a little bummed, but we'll see how they handle the exchange before I get too upset.   :)

They are sending me a prepaid UPS label  thumb  and will send the replacement as soon as they receive mine.   I'd have preferred a cross-ship replacement, but as hot as it has been, I'm not riding much anyway.

They are cross shipping my replacement.  I called back to ask--I should have asked to begin with.

Haha, I shattered one of those riot-mask shields last century and had a minor cheek injury...

Anyway, Scorpion's EXO-900 manual pretty bluntly admits that the chinbar is there as a brace for the rest of the helmet, and not to protect facial beauty.  Basically the shoe box is stiffer with the lid on, but the solidly joined bottom half is stronger than the loose, temporary box-topped portion.

I knowingly accept the increased risk because I love the convenience.

How do you like yours, Gizmo and HC?
Okay, I finally rode with my EXO-900.  The fit is fine, and truly reveals how worn out my old helmet was.  The weight and balance are a non-issue thus far.  Was worried about a whistling noise, but the visor just needed a tap to seal better for the quiet I'm used to.

My gripes are numerous, but petty (and mostly direct comparisons to my old Schuberth).
  • The first 'click' position to open the visor is higher than I'd like.
  • The sun visor lever is counterintuitive: up for down, down for up.  Furthermore it has poor leverage and doesn't really stop at in-between heights.  Additionally, the little nose cut-out kink is an unnecessary visual distraction for those without giant noses.
  • The venting is not as great as you'd expect.  It does the job, but nothing special
  • The front lower vent is a ridiculous design that gets shut by your hand when raising/lowering the chinbar

Otherwise, the thing is very nice.  Good visibility, fine quality, all that.  BTW, it turned out a Scorpion representative swung by the dealer the day after I returned the thing for that crack on the collar trim.  He had a spare piece and so I got my original helmet back, fixed.  The fact that parts are somewhat available and the unit is repairable gives me a bit of confidence in something from the land of rubber doggie doo-doo.

Glad it worked out for you, Happy.

I agree that the ventilation is somewhat less that optimal.  That top vent looks like it would funnel more air in than it does.

I got my XL exo-400 on Friday.    I feel obligated to say that Extreme Supply was quick in getting me the correct size helmet after sending me the wrong one.

Like happycommuter, I find the first notch a bit too high.  Otherwise, I'm very happy with the very afordable exo-400.  The matte antracite paired with a silver mirrored shield is pretty bad ass looking, too.
