Well started to rebuild the Hawk yesterday. Had it since late 2008 and since then it had began to leak from the right most bolt for the valve assembly cover...threads were thrashed and not to help during this the rear shoes cracked. So I figured y not rebuild it some before the season really picks up(here in PA still have some pretty cold days...and right now alot of rain). So how is where I'm at.

Took the engine apart while in the frame. Removed all the way down to the jug and including the jug. Honed the walls(bike only has 16k!) and installed new gaskets around each cylinder and new base gasket. Cleaned the pistons and installed the jug. Installed new headgasket and installed the head. Set the crank to 1.4T for timing and stopped for the engine. Sanded and painted the battery/hardware tray.

Things to do still: install the cam, install valve assembly and set clearance(all new gaskets), clean the carbs and pray they don't need rebuilding, install airbox and electrical. Install new cam and fork seals/oil...and lastly new shoes. Already had the tank/front fender/side panels/plastic under seat custom painted!

That's it for now...pics be posted tonight when I'm back home.

Well did some more work today(only alittle since i worked till 5). Took off the rear tire, chain, and the rear swing arm. Cleaned up some more of the trans/engine since i can now access this more. Tomorrow i'll install the new chain/brake shoes and reinstall everything. Pretty sure i'm ganna completely flush the brake system and use new fluid(dont know how old it is puzzled. I already fixed the damaged thread i spoke of before so looks like this is going smoothly. Hope i can have it running by this weekend or maybe monday/tuesday! happy1

You know, it may not exactly be my thing, but it's like that tank was made for that paint job.  It looks excellent. Definitely nice work.

Thanks everyone and my painter says thanks too. Well I wasn't going to fix up...was planning on selling. Idea was simple, sell the hawk, put money on my 2008 GS500F...sell the Suzuki then...buy a newish boulevard c50 or a vulcan 900! Would buy a shadow over them but I want EFI. Altho the new shadow phantom is EFI and amazing looking!

But....girlfriend couldn't stand riding the gs500 and didn't want to wait till we saved up more to get a new cruiser...so here I am, and I'm so happy to be here!

I would post a video but I broke my digital camera...G/F has one but we can't find the USB plug(could just radio shack it) we will see. I really want to get a Mac 4-2 exhaust and do pod filters and rejet...but I don't really have $500 laying around. Anyone have a suggestion on exhaust? This 4-4 looks great but I don't like the sound. I already drilled out the rivets.

I had a similar idea about the ghosted skull but wanted to use the glow in the dark stuff for that.  Nice work...

I thought about removng the baffles but haven't figured out how...plus it might be to loud then.

Valves are done but ran into so trouble. Seems the new chain I go isn't the right one...only has 50 links. Old one has 53/54(can't remember) so I threw on the old one for now. Cleaned the back end up some more and painted top half of the frame(lightly sanded the little rust spots). That's it fo today. Now no more work till Monday unless I find alittle spare time this weekend.

Thanks I can't wait either. Trust me my back after every long ride reminds me to keep on task. Think since I'm out of work at 5 today I'll do some work. Finish cleaning most likely. Really gotta remember to snap some shots and upload them.

I dont see why you couldn't get some new studs at the local hardware store. I broke one on my Sportster and replaced it with one from Menards. Just bring one of your other studs to match it up.

Yea that was my plan once I got one of the others out. Just getting one out won't be the easiest thing to do. Was hoping someone knew the size or a site I can order from to save time. Thanks you tho, any and all help is appreciated!

Awesome pics on the head gasket area. Mine needs this done as well so the pics are helpful if I ever get the nerve to try it some day.

Still need to pull the old stud(ganna try using a hacksaw and cutting a line in it so i can use a big flathead)! Thats all to update for now everyone...had some kind of bug for a week...fever and nasty head cold, getting much better tho. Hope to be done soon!
