Now...what does this thing on the bike do?

I have done it twice now! Just when the first wound is about finished healing, I do it again! I'm considering buying a cheap pair of shin pads to every time I am near my bike or taking the stand off. What do you guys think? It hurts like hell...

Is this happening while your taking it off the center stand or putting it on? And where are you when this happens? Next to the bike, or sitting on the bike?

This happens when I am standing next to the bike doing basic repairs, without even trying to use the stand. Today, I pushed it into the garage to charge the battery ( I had to push it cause I have the seat and tank off to change out the cylinder head cover gasket). Once in the garage, I walked right into it splitting open my skin right through my jeans. ugh.

The part of the center stand that I keep hitting on my shin is the part that sticks out on the left side. It is where you put your foot on to put down the stand. It looks like another peg (almost) between the driver and passenger pegs. It's a silly thing to do, but it causes all kinds of bad words when you do it.

Wow sounds like the PO must have sharpened that center stand to a razor edge It's happened to me before but not as often as it seems to be happening to you.

Isn't that supposed to have a rounded end or something on it?

OK. My bike was wrecked by the PO on that side and it doesn't stick out that much at all.
OH. maybe you can bend it in some. Mine still works and it barely sticks out at all. There are other things you would run into before the center stand.

That centerstand piece must be sticking way out in order for your shins to hit it. Our 750's muffler ends stick out farther than the lever. It would help a lot if you took a pic and posted it. The only time I injure my shins is when I get off the bike, remove my riding pants and my exposed legs touch the red-hot muffler while getting something off the seat....

Our 750's muffler ends stick out farther than the lever. This got me to thinking - 82CB750SC - do you have the original exhaust? I know that on my bike that "knob" or whatever would stick waaayy out if I didn't have the original exhaust on there. The reason I ask is because I know a lot of people seem to have changed over exhausts by now. Matt

That's a good point matt, the center stand is meant to wrap around he left side exhaust and if you have a 4-1 on the right then the side peice would stick out a good bit.

you got it guys. One of the PO threw on a 4 into 1 exhaust on the right. I knew about the stock exhaust being 4 into 4, but never thought the the old pipes would be out that far. It just never occurred to me. I'll try and get a picture up tomorrow afternoon. I'll even throw one or two in of my busted up shin!

Check out the location of the centerstand lever under the left muffler, which is not sticking out much.

Well here are the pictures I promised. From the side The view from the back, showing how far the center stand sticks out. My injured shin! Is there any way I can make a future accidental impact less painful? Could I wrap it in rubber or something? My shins would appreciate any suggestions.

Cut an X shaped in a tennis ball and stick it on there while it is in the garage. Not a permanent fix but it will keep you from getting injured while you are working in there.

I thought about welding it or removing it, but you know how it always goes. A few days after I do either of those I'll regret it for some reason. I'll either need it if I end up removing it, or if I cut it down, I'll come across a free 4 into 4 spotless exhaust system.
I like the tennis ball idea! I'll be picking up a few this weekend. Thanks guys!

Lol, i thought about that, and have done it a few times, but it can be a pain to get that thing up and down again. I think I'm going with the tennis ball idea...maybe even spray paint it black so it blends in.
