Howdy. I just purchased an 83 650 nighthawk off of e-bay, and also re-aquired an 83 550 nighthawk that I had owned years ago.  I'm trying to breathe some life into both of them but I figured I'd start with the 650 as the 550 just needs some tlc and minor parts (should be easier).

650 is another story.  For starters; the key is wrong.  All of the wires were disconnected (fixed that).  The only other thing that has me concerned is the clutch master was bone dry, and bleeding to the nipple hasn't brought pressure back yet.  I'm going to pull the cover and take a look.

Any insight on either problem would be great.

I know honda can make a key but the closest dealer is 150 miles away.  If anybody has an online source, I'd appreciate it.  In the meantime I'd like to continue wrenching some life back into this thing.  If anybody knows which harness wires to jumper to keep moving forward; PLEASE PM ME.  I'm dying to fire this thing over, and I don't really feel like waiting the three weeks for a key.

Here's the 650:

here's the two (used the 550 as my schematic to re-wire)

I have a couple of tips for your clutch issue.  Use a hand held vaccum pump to "pull" the air out.  $5.00 at Harbor Freight.

Also, leave the clutch master cylinder cover off when you bleed (keeping atmospheric pressure on top of the fluid).  CAUTION - brake fluid eats paint.  Be sure to cover anything painted well with towels, visqueen, etc.  Also, while the m/c cover is off, gingerly squeeze the handle to pressurize the system - this so the fluid doesn't "burp" out of the m/c and onto anything painted.

After 2 hours of bleeding the clutch, I tried these 2 tricks and had it done in 5 minutes.

Thanks for the tips!  I've got a vac pump around (somewhere).  I'll give it a go before I crack into the basket.  Thanks.

Is the slave cylinder servicable (hone & plug) or is it a sealed deal?

+1 on the vacuum trick.
Yeah those clutches are hard to bleed. I think when I did mine, I attached a very long clear tube to the bleeder valve. I opened it up and 'sucked' the fluid out...being careful not to get it in my mouth. Finished it off with a few pumps on the lever and bleeding the old fashioned way and then all good.
