I finally got myself a 'hawk! The solid blue one I picked up first, in running condition, just needed a little tlc. The paint looks good from a distance, but up close it was cracking. The tank had a bare spot where the PO had patched a hole (the last pic is a sneak peek at my new colors, will have a black Honda wing on there eventually). I changed the oil and filter, cleaned the carbs to hopefully cure an idling problem. It would idle fine until after it warmed up, then it would die unless I gave it a little throttle.

Then I came across the second bike (black and blue) on CL for $150 (and got it for $100!). This is super cool 'cause it has brand new tires, which is all I really needed, and now I've got a parts bike for less than I was going to pay for new tires! This bike, also an 84, is missing a bunch of parts, looks like the tranny was getting some work, no starter, forks leak, missing some brake parts. The exhaust is interesting, has anybody seen Sankei exhaust on a nighthawk? I'm going to give that a listen on bike #1.

My plan is to take what I need from the parts bike and sell the rest. I don't know what shape the motor is in, but I'd like to keep that and totally rebuild it for a backup. I'll need the seat for the pan (bike #1 seat won't latch) and I want to reshape and cover it to look like a Corbin.

Are there other parts I should keep, maybe things that are hard to find and expensive?

Great deal! Welcome aboard. I'd be interested to hear how that exhaust on the #2 NH sounds like. Never heard of that kind before.

The blue one does look great in the pics. I like the looks of that color.

Dude, 1st off  welcome!!
Secondly, I hate you for getting two NH's for so cheap. Just kidding! That's awesome!
Third, isn't green and black a Kawasaki color combo?

From what I can figure Sankei supplies stock exhaust for lots of bikes. I guess what I have is the stock exhaust from something, I'm not sure what, that somebody spliced into the NH pipes. The number on the exhaust is 2240 if anybody knows what that's from. I can't find it anywhere.

welcome superUPer. I would keep as much of the parts bike as you can store. The parts are getting harder to find and expensive. That green should look pretty interesting  lurker

Welcome to the group.  Is the fairing on #1 stock?  it looks different from the picture angle.  Also, from reading this website, the instrument cluster is getting rare - especially the clear gage cover, if #2 is in good shape.

 welcome

Sounds like you got a good deal. Like skramer said, would be best to keep all the extra parts if you have the room.

The fairing is stock, the windshield is broken so it looks funny. I already had planned to swap the intstrument cluster, I can hardly see through the one on NH#1. I guess I'll try to clean it up and keep it. The cool thing is they both show 25XXX miles.

I'm up and running again, but far from finished. I guess I'm another addict. I'll have a project thread going soon with lots of pictures. If my spare motor turns looks good inside I may be doing a full tear down and rebuild. If I can get some help. And if I can get some funding. I should be able to rebuild for under $500, right?

Anyway, this paint looks really cool in person. I put a flake over the black, but you can't see it unless it's in the sun. It really shines!

I tried out the mystery exhaust. It looks good and is way lighter than stock. It sounds good idling, but that's all I like about it. It's too loud and annoying when you're on the gas. If I can figure out how I'll post a video.

Enough for now, project thread to come.

That is a NICE job on that green. Just curious, though, why you painted the rear rim and not the front?

Haven't got that far yet... Actually the front brakes needed some work, so I was waiting till I finish that so I don't get brake fluid on a fresh paint job.

I think it looks cool with the painted wheel. Looking forward to the pics with both wheels painted.

If I know what I'm doing, there will be a video here... It sounds better on the computer than in person, but it might be growing on me.

Hi Folks. Nice looking Hawks there!
Just dropped in because of a google search on the Sankei 2240. (looking for parts)
I can tell you that the 2240 comes stock on the "classic" 85-87 Honda Rebel 250 (shares the engine with the Nighthawk 250) When well broken in they have a nice sound IMHO biker_h4h1

Here's a pick of my Reb with the 2240
