Met another member Pics + Video

I met up with another forum member today...Paul (ak85lp). Paul lives in Ottawa, Ontario and I live in Kingston, Ontario. So we met half way and went for a short ride through some back cottage roads.

Meeting at the half way point in Smiths Falls, ON. Paul brought his friend Keith.

While we were there, one of the employees at the snack place came out to chat. He drove a KLR (seen in the background of the above pic) and is a member of the KLR forums and knew of Hondo

Thanks for sharing those Jeff. The old 650 doesn't look too bad from a distance! Great ride, hope to do it again sometime and a bit longer run. Nice to finally meet you.

Yeah, that was fun Paul.
My ride back home along Perth Road/Division St was good. If you haven't been on it in a while, maybe I can meet you in Westport next Sat morning and we can drive back along it. Some good twisties...if you don't get stuck behind a car.

That wooden bridge was unexpected.  We have very few of those, they would rot well before their time.

Gammer - your bike sounds good with the supertrapp.

I wonder what the "nitro" switch is for on the cx500?

Yeah that bridge goes over a railway. I know there is a rather large wooden trestle in that area too. Some day I will have to find it and snap a pic. Its pretty neat.

The Supertrapp does sound nice. I used to think it was too loud. But after riding with a bunch of Harley's on the Ride For Dad, I now know its quiet in comparison. I am running 6 discs on it, which is average. I read in an old magazine article that for the Nighthawk S, you can go to a max of 10 discs and after that there is no performance gains. I ran 10 at one point, but it was way too loud for me and it made my head buzz and not in a good way.

The "nitro" switch is just for a joke on Keith's bike. Note the wine cork on the right which covers up a 12 volt outlet. Too much time on his hands.

Whats different here? Look at the engines between the gammers and ak85lp's machines. A lot more light coming through the later.

The big one would be the alternator location on the 700s. The SOHC/4 had its stator on the left side of the crank, making the engine pretty wide. For the DOHC Nighthawk engines, Honda moved the stator to directly underneath carbs #1 and #2.

That and I'm sure the cylinders themselves are bigger, as the 700s' cylinders were designed around having 750cc of displacement and the SOHC 650 cylinders were designed around having 550cc of displacement (the 650 engine is based on the original SOHC 550).

Not like 50cc makes much difference on identical bikes.

Gammer - since we are a little  , I noticed your rear peg brackets are blackened on the inside, correct?  Another member (Tdodge I think) has the same thing.  Mine are not - polished aluminum throughout.  I don't think my brackets are from an '86 (everything was blackened on the '86).

I'm pretty sure that the black on the inside on the 84 and 85's is stock. I have three sets of the rear pegs/brackets and they are all the same.
It sounds like a PO of your bike took the paint off and polished 'em up.

Mine was painted by a PO, like a few other details on my bike. Got to do something about that in a few weeks..
